I was checking out the "udder" exhaust can and how nice the HS paint looks.

This car has been such a cock tease. A few pics here and there, some short video clips, nothing of the car in motion. Even the exhaust clips we get, none of them give it the beans. Driving me .

Yep - the problem is that none of these cars are being driven to the spots that people are catching these glimpses and short clips. The S55 needs to be warm to get a true indication of how it sounds...

Why is that? I had an S55 for 30k miles . Seemed to sound the same to me hot or cold.

I agree with dmboone25 100%. I don't know, maybe you are not as sensitive to the difference in sound but I think there is a significant difference in the quality of the sound when S55 is cold vs warm. If you rev the car right after the start as seen in these videos, you will get a much raspier tone and if you rev it a few min later when the car is at normal operating temp, it sounds much deeper and better in general. I have observed this with both ZCP and Non-ZCP that had various exhaust setups (aftermarket exhausts, stock ZCP exhaust, MPE, etc, same story with all of them).

Ahh I meant driving. Free revving a i6 is a recipe for bad sound. Luckily at 38 I never feel the need to do that anymore.

I made this video the other day - I had driven the car hard and just pulled up in the driveway to get a snippet of what I consider to be a more realistic representation of how the S55 sounds (whether you like it or not).

If you listen to that video just posted again, and then this one - I can hear distinct differences (and I am not talking about the pops and crackles). But that's just me.

You beat me to it and explained it better as well.

Maybe it's just me but I would still say it's significantly raspier driving past 4K RPM when it's cold compared to driving at the the same RPM when it's warm. I mean I see your point, this car won't sound like a flat plane crank v8 all of a sudden when it's warmed up but I still think there is a noticeable difference

During cold start the car runs rich to get the cats up to operating temp. The exhaust valves are closed and it idles at a higher RPM. Sounds like a dump truck IMO. The exhaust warming up and expanding is probably the other cause of the exhaust note changing as it warms up.

Yup ... I even asked if I can jump on board a car to do a decent sound clip and rev it properly, because everyone will be revving it in comfort mode...

Hate to break it to you but every S55 I hear in the wild warmed up sounds like garbage too especially if it has a DP. Maybe the comments are founded in reality?

Agree on the downpipes. They make it worse IMO too. Even though sound is subjective, most people would agree that S55 doesn't sound good especially in its stock form and I can understand an N55 owner not liking it at all. However, there are many ways to improve it, such as this video that I wouldn't personally classify as garbage (please listen to it with your headphones if possible):

That is your own opinion and your are entitled to it. My opinion I hate how DP's make exhaust sound on all cars, not just the S55. The N55/N54 both sound worse with catless DP's. The S55 sound amazing with the right setup. A single path midpipe is whats needed on the S55. It evens out the exhaust pulses from the two turbos. OEM DP's, AA midpipe, Remus rear...sounds really good. Deeper tone and the overrevs have a snap.

I think the S55 sounds great with just a Mid-Pipe.

Side-Note: I wouldn't even classify the sound from a 718 Porsche as garbage.
