Metal flakes on mag drain plug at oil change normal?
Installed a magnetic drain plug at about 16k and just did a 25k oil, change. The plug captured some metal flakes and some burnt on the oil plug. Is this amount normal for about 10k miles?

You are going to have some build up. What's normal is a totally different question. I'm not sure that question can be answered reasonably without others posting pictures to gain data to go by.
IMHO, be happy the plug did its job and don't worry. If it really bothers you get a report done on your next oil change. That bottom picture looks like a piece of plastic, I wouldn't be worried about that unless you find more next oil change. |

Yes, happy the plug did what it was intended to. Worth the $11.95 I paid for it! The piece pulled off the plug was definitely metal as it would get attracted back to the plug when taking it off.

Up around the timing chain it’s not unusual to get a larger fragment early on. Was the larger fragment soft or could it pierce your skin if you squeezed it ? Any way it could be plastic from the oil quart twist tab. |

That's a rather large piece if it's metal. The bad part is you have know idea how long it was in there, it could have been there since assembly (factory contamination) or just recently broke off something that could be damaged. If it was me I would definitely change the oil again sooner than later to see if more comes out. How long to wait before changing I'm not sure. If it was my car I would definitely be changing the oil again before 3k miles and sending a sample to Blackstone.
Hopefully someone else will chime in and offer their wisdom as well. |

The piece is definitely metal- re-tested it with a small magnet and the magnetic attraction is still there. It is quite burnt so no sharp edges, but I think hard enough to penetrate the skin if it was propelled fast enough (like a piece of shrapnel).

This is one of my post and seems relevant. My metal shavings were aluminum though. The magnet would indicate a ferrous metal. |

+1 on sending it to Blackstone. Best case it's normal. Worse case it's not but you'll have scientific proof to take to the dealer.
