Wireless Charging Try

Hello All,

I have an iPhone 6 so I cannot use wireless charging, however I was wondering if the car will remind you that you left your phone in the car if it is not compatible with wireless charging.

I initial figured no because I thought that the car had to recognize a wireless compatible phone in the tray before it could then tell you 'hey you left your phone in the car.'

I have had an alert go off a few times when I was getting out of the car and at first I could not see the display in the instrument cluster since the steering wheel retracts up and away when you open the door. I did not think much of the chime, until it happened again and I looked more closely and low and behold the car had the Left Cell Phone Behind warning! I did not take note of the position my phone was in. I usually have the wire plugged in and the phone is laying across the cup holder, or in a cup holder. If it's farther forward it's usually sitting on top of the coiled wire to hide the slack. So I have to find out if the phone has to be sitting flat on the charging plate for the reminder to be triggered. Or has it been active all alone and only needs to note a blue tooth connection or wire connection with a phone to warn you?

I'll have to mess around with a few configurations to figure this out. I had turned on the warning thing the first day I had the car.

I also though perhaps a software update had happened? My stereo rebooted while I was driving out of the blue a few days ago. My wife and I were both looking at the thing wondering the same WTF moment. Perhaps it did an update and rebooted?

Good question on the reminder and very cool that it reminds you even if it is not actively engaged in wireless charging!

I've left my phone in there charging quite a few times. It is hard to see the reminder where it shows up on the dash. It would be infinitely more useful if it were to come up on the main info display.

Looking forward to the outcome of your tests. Thanks!

So it did not do the reminder chime with the phone plugged in and laying near the try. Did not do it with the phone laying on the tray with wire plugged in. I thought about it and at the two times it went off I was actively streaming by blue tooth to the stereo. I just had the car out for a quick bank run and turned the blue tooth streaming on, but had the music off when I got home. So I'll have to see if it chimes when the blue tooth is actively streaming music.

Odd if that does it then why not simply chime because the phone is connected by blue tooth?

That is a little strange but then again doesn't it automatically connect to the phone by bluetooth every time you turn it on and get in with the phone in the car (assuming you have bluetooth turned on on your phone)?

The phone connects every time, but blue tooth telephone vs streaming are two different things. I'll have to check my theory tomorrow.

Phone in tray, laying flat and plugged in to USB port. Actively streaming music to stereo.

"Cell phone left in car" warning came on.

Next going to try "streaming actively" but not plugged in, just sitting in tray.

Then for kicks and giggles, try streaming only, but phone in pocket.

Plugged in to USB, NOT laying in charge tray, sitting in cup holder, streaming music. Did not trigger the "left phone in car" alert.

So it appears the NON-WIRELESS charging phone will trigger the "left phone in car alert." if it is laying flat on the tray and is actively streaming music (stereo on) at the time you turn off the car.

I wonder if the gesture control camera (?) is picking up something there or if there is some other type of proximity sensor in there?

No, it ONLY senses the "Charging phone" as far as I can tell.

So with the phone in the tray (flat) and streaming music BUT NOT PLUGGED INTO THE USB WIRE (I.E. NOT CHARGING) it did not sound the warning chime when I turned the car off and opened the door.

The only time it does do the chime with a NON-wireless charging phone is when it is 1. flat in tray, 2. connected to USB (ie charging) AND 3. Actively Streaming Bluetooth music (or pod cast or whatever).

It is NOT trigger by the fact that the phone is connected via bluetooth to the car's telephone interface.

I ordered the BMW iPhone 6 wireless charging case, so hopefully that will work and I can use my iPhone 6 for a few more years. The lightning plug is getting wonky and if I connect the case I hope the connection will be stable once plugged in.

I'd just get the iPhone X but we cannot use our VIP access program for medical prescriptions using the FaceID instead of the Thumb print ID. Despite the fact that the FaceID is less likely to be fooled than the Thumb print ID. And just getting a new iPhone 8 just for the wireless charging when my 6 is working fine otherwise is just stupid. I can save the money for TIRES and Gasoline. LOL.

The thing that is odd, is that it is counter intuitive that the phone without wireless charging which is laying in the tray, or connected via bluetooth to the phone system, or connected via bluetooth to the Connected Drive apps, etc, is not enough to trigger the "hey you left your phone in the car' warning. Just what the HELL were the Engineers thinking when they implemented this feature? Seems to me that it would be pretty friggen easy to flag the phone as present with any one or all of those connectivity methods. "Managing Software Engineers - Like Herding Cats"

Mike

(otherwise the car is friggen fantastic LOL)

Got BMW iPhone 6/6s charging case. Works great in car. But I thought it had a passthrough for the cable connection but it does not, dam it. Now I have to get a wireless charging base.....or pull the case of every night...smart engineering....bastards....

Bump.

Hi all - I have a 6S as well. Anyone know of problems when it comes to putting the phone with cards in the wireless tray?
