Probably both. Don't think there was a difference between the tow ratings for the various engines on the E70 and F15.

What's funny is that I have never once see an X5 (or any other German SUV) tow anything.

They tow well. And it's fun to run some laps in it and pass other people. Sure surprises them.

I'm not saying they can't tow well. It's just something I've never seen being done.

I'm pretty sure that the tow rate on my F15 M50D is 3500 kg which I believe is 7700 lb with the OEM hitch

The problem has never been the hitch, it's been wiring In The brake controller! Stupid BMW electronics! I finally gave up the process and got a wireless.

What is the payload rating on this car. F15s are typically around 1100 pounds. I have a feeling payload would be far exceeded by the tongue weight of a 7200 pound trailer. This will never be able to safely tow 7200 pounds, at least not a US trailer which typically has 13% tongue weight. My F150 is rated to tow 9000 pounds but is payload limited to approx a 6000 pound trailer. I think it is disingenuous of manufacturers to publish these ridiculous tow ratings knowing full well they don't have the payload rating to support it.

And then offer a complex, unnecessary contraption that limits the capacity to 3500 lbs, as they did for F15.

BMW seems to be unable to get the trailer towing system right. Both of my E53s had a 2" receiver sticking out in the center of the rear bumper, and safety chains were scuffing the lower lip of the bumper. In my E71, BMW had to cut the bottom of the rear bumper, splice a cable to add the wiring harness, and add a metal bracket to stiffen the lower lip. In my F15 there is a somewhat hidden receiver under the bumper, the actual 2" receiver connects to it, locks, which doesn't matter locked or not, still removable, so close to the lower side that you have to be careful not starch the paint on M sport bumper...

And every time they had to remove the rear bumper to do the work because there is no factory option...

Please, can you look at Audi, Mercedes, or an American vehicle and copy.
