328xi RPM flutter on cold start

Looking for some input. 2007 328xi with 280,000 kms.

There is a slight uneasiness to the idle within the first 15-20 seconds after a cold start, but after that no issues. There seem to be one or two 'surges' and then it settles out.

Is there any cause for concern? I've read plenty of other threads about bouncing idles, but these seem to concern a persistent instability in RPM's, which doesn't describe what I'm experiencing.

Edit: No codes found

Thanks!

I’d say swap the vanos actuators becuz they’re free and it’s easy.

Also, try scanning codes. Could be the beginning of a coil/spark plug related issue. Family members 328xi had a cold start stutter that triggered a misfire issue - ended up being a coil.

Thanks man.

Swap the actuators as in a literal position swap? I cleaned them the other week, but I feel like it was a rain dance in some ways. Didn't observe any difference, but I'll definitely switch them if that's what you're suggesting.

Plugs and coils are all very new. Like really new. Hopefully they aren't causing the problem...

Shoulda mentioned in my first post that there are no related codes. I've got a few persistent ones at the moment, but they all have logical explanations (AUC Sensor, E-Box fan, something to do with audio system...)

Mine's doing similar to yours except the car actually shakes, the fluctuation of the RPM isn't as pronounced though

Side note.. I noticed my gauge cluster is different than yours, has oil temperature instead of l/km

That's because you have an E92 328, you lucky bastard lol. E90 328 only has the stupid mpg gauge. I'd much rather know the engine oil temp (like a 335) than the damn MPG fuel consumption.

Yeah, most people swap the physical position when you clean them - they're interchangeable and are the same part number. As you know, it's pretty fast to swap them and wouldn't hurt to give it a try.
