BMW 8 Series Prototype Crashes In Germany, Killing Passenger
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com The driver was apparently able to walk away from the incident and no other vehicles were involved. Authorities say the vehicle was speeding at the time of the incident and the driver subsequently lost control, according to German-language source Bayrischer Rundfunk. We’ve reached out to BMW for a statement and further details, and will update this story if the company provides further information. It appears that the vehicle flipped multiple times, landing on its right side and blocking access to the passenger door. While the driver was able to climb out of the wreckage, you can see in the video that first responders had to cut through the roof of the mangled prototype to reach the trapped passenger. The BMW 8 Series is nearing the end of the testing, with the final reveal slated for June 15th at Le Mans. Camouflaged prototypes have been running around for months already, and this may be the first to have crashed on public roads." Source Accident happened near Landshut... |

That's terrible news. Poor family of he passenger. Slightly odd the driver was near enough unhurt. Airbag off or even the seat belt undone for the passenger? Tragic news.

Passenger nearly always dies or severly
injured in catastrophic crashes like this. Driver's often come away relatively unscathed. Pretty common actually. |

Looks like a result of several rare factors which unfortunately happened all at once for the passenger. Bumped head in the wrong spot = broken neck? Unbalanced curtain airbag inflation? Or maybe failed curtain airbag detonation? I see remains of all units except the passenger side unless it was cut right away.
Strangely enough I was in the middle of mailing out a pass. curtain airbag for a f10 m5. |

Wow absolutely tragic, so terrible to hear about I feel so sorry for those involved
It will be interesting to see how BMW will rebound from a situation like this, given the hype & anticipation surrounding the upcoming 8 Series

Condolences to the passenger and his family.
That is too bad for BMW, although there is no information as to what caused the incident to occur, whether it was a part failure or a driver error, the main picture will be on BMW. Hopefully we see more info to determine an accident or driver arrogance, but speeding doesn't help. |

Sad but true. Probably because as a driver, it's your natural instinct to manoeuvre the car in such a manner to save yourself from direct impact/harm. Basic human instinct I suppose.

I read earlier today on a German website the test driver took his girlfriends mother for a ride and it hit several trees before coming to rest. An utterly terrible situation to be in.

geez. I'm sure BMW will be keenly interested it the crash data to see if the fatality could have been prevented (did the car's safety features indeed work as intended?)

I feel sad for the families of the passenger that died, and I hope this is not a testament to a lack of safety in this car.
