F06/F12/F13 2012+ 6 series reliability?
Been thinking of getting a 2012+ 650i but reliability is hit or miss it seems. Some people are saying they have had no problems, while others are reporting massive electrical issues. What are everyone's opinions on them from here? Thanks

You came to the wrong place for info man. Most here drive E90s. Have you tried the 6 series forums?

If I ask anyone on a 6 series forum, they will say of course it's reliable. I wanted to ask here as a general question because it wouldn't be as biased as asking on there lol. 640i I figured was better reliability wise, but apparently they don't make them in manual transmission which is a turn off.

Go to multiple forums for that car and do your research. Look at the common failure points. Then see if it's worth the risk. The benefit of forums like these is you will always see the cars weak point because that's what's mostly talked about. Honestly, I wouldn't even open up a thread. Just go through it, look at the open recalls, failure points, and how hard/easy it is to DIY things. Then make your decision based on that. Good luck OP. |

Actually, I’d recommend heading over to the 5 series section both on here and also on bimmerfest. You’ll get some good suggestions there. But overall these cars are pretty solid if you get the right engine.

My F06 M6GC is a few days over 4 yrs old. It was delivered with less than a mile on the odometer at the Welt in Munich. It has about 12k miles on it and has had routine maintenance with oil changes and brake flushes.
These have been my issues: 1) I’ve had two batteries replaced under warranty although this last battery was an “upgraded” one. The original battery caused some electrical glitch that lit up a drivetrain malfunction. It was weird, but the car was drivable and felt fine. I actually drove around in LA and back home to the Bay Area without problems. 2) I had the recall performed for the coolant line heat shield 3) steering rack failure which is rare. It was replaced under warranty for free. I believe that a new rack is around $3k and who knows how many hours of labor at almost $200/hr. I also got to drive a new xDrive X5 for 4 days. Overall it’s been a great and fun car to drive. And nope I won’t be trading it in for the M8 or new M5.

They eat through batteries and oil
I believe they’re on the second revision of the N63 engine now (N63TU2). Many of the same issues from the N62 can be found within the N63 ie VCG, valve stem seals etc Personally the car is gorgeous, but I would never own one especially coming from the previous gen 650i. It seems like BMW didn’t learn from their mistakes I would buy for a 640i if it were between the two |
