Tesla Model 3 vs 335i. Is it faster?
My friend just got a Model 3. Car is weird, interior is weird, and it drives weird. Anyways back to my topic. He's already talking about how fast it is (he comes from a 2011 Durango which is why he thinks it's so fast).
He knows I drive a BMW and he wants to race. I'm not exactly stock, not all modded out either. Just your basic FBO mods, with some VTT Stage 1s getting installed within the next week months or so. Here's the thing. The car *feels* quick. I'm thinking because of no gear changes. It sounds like your going fast because you could actually hear quite a bit of outside noise in the cabin, but when you think you're going 80, your only going 60. The fastest Model 3 is supposedly 271 HP. Not sure how reliable that is though. It's also not that light of a car coming in at the lightest 3500 lbs. The 335i stock gets 280WHP and weighs about the same. I can't find any videos on YouTube for a race probably because the Model 3 is so scarce. What do you all think? |

There not issuing the 4 wheel drive model 3 yet and not releasing
the cheap one either . The zero to 60 time of the current release is suppose to be 5.1 sec 0 to 60.(big battery RWD) |

The model 3 was voted to drive better than the modern 3 series. I’m not sure I’d call that weird.
The center of gravity is lower and it’s mechanically a much simpler. As far as speed, he’ll beat you off the line but you’ll beat him up high. The Tesla will get the jump on you at almost any speed, but given a long enough stretch of open road you’ll real him in. |

Yeah that's no comparison. The performance version better be faster than my 335i for 70k+.
The current model 3 pound for pound almost matches up to a stock 335i of this year and yesteryear. Like I said, it feels fast but it's honestly hard to judge a full electric drivetrain because I'm just not used to it. I'm not in a rush to race. My car isn't driveable right now but it was more or less both of us flexing to each other . With that being said, I have no doubt he'll beat me quarter mile. I just don't know how much he'd beat me by. |

Good thread here. I have a friend who just got his Tesla 3 about two weeks ago, and I've had a chance to both see it and ride in it. Not sure of the versions, but his is pretty base (cost in the mid-$30s), although I think he has the bigger battery. Going by side-to-side comparison, the Tesla is taller, wider, and longer than my E92 and weighs a bit more (3800 lbs), though not by that much since I have xDrive.
Anyway, I thought this Model 3 was somewhere around 4.8 seconds 0-60 (I'm citing the stats my friend gave me), whereas my N55 335i is closer to 5.4 stock, right? And then I might lose a little time shifting. Regardless, I sure think the Tesla feels quick. With full power available in an instant, it's just a matter of how fast the wheels can get up to speed carrying the vehicle. The performance is undeniable, certainly faster than anything burning gasoline that I am willing to spend money on. Going back to what the OP said, there *is* a weirdness factor. It's certainly a paradigm shift, for example, where performance enhancements can be pushed by Tesla via software updates. (Today's WSJ has an article about this.) I felt the Tesla brake automatically, without driver instigation, around offramp curves for regenerative purposes. Whereas I'm pleased as can be with the lack of iDrive screen in my E92 (no distracted driving), this Tesla boasts a 15-inch flat panel display across the middle of the dash as the only set of gauges. There's a lot more involved switching to an EV, apparently, than just choosing a different energy source. |

They have so far only produced the 50k version with the big battery
and the premium package . You can still get the 7500 off maybe to the end of next month(200k car federal limit ) and whatever your state does but not for long. If you ordered one now it might take up to 2 years to get it. |

Depending on which model 3 your friend has, you may or may not dust him. Also the 335i makes close to 300 whp stock....this motor is under rated. Its probably pushing 320hp at the crank. I'd slap on a JB4 and some sticky tires. Remove excess weight from car, etc.

I guess my real question is stock for stock, how much quicker is the Model 3 than the 335i. I could see the model 3 beating it to 60. But when I drove my friends model 3, it just didn't really feel all that fast. Maybe I'm just unimpressed? |

as others said...from a dig he'll win...you'll probably win in a roll race. electric cars have 100% torque at 0 rpm vs your 335i who has to wait around 3-4000 rpm to hit peak torque.
Also electric car has more even weight distribution and lower center of gravity which helps with traction and launches. race him when he's at half charge, the ecu will pull power when the battery is low..lol. |

Quickest Model 3 currently available runs 0-60 in about 5 seconds flat and is probably not even hitting 100mph at the quarter mile marker. Your in a FBO N54 335i? Assuming it's running properly, you will absolutely walk away from a Model 3. If you aren't racing until you get your stage 1 turbos on and tuned you will put bus lengths on a Model 3.

If/when I race, I do want it to be fair and square. He's the kind of guy who won't shut up if the race wasn't exactly fair so yeah... As far as the speed, I doubt the 335i would walk it. The model 3 has instant full power whereas the torque delay on any combustion engine definitely will come into effect. I'll be scouring the internet to see when someone with a 335i races a Model 3. It might be awhile though... |

It may do 310 miles but at city speeds, definitely not at track use. You might get lucky if you do a few laps before the battery needs a recharge.
The harder you push an EV the faster the batter drain, keep this in mind. |
