take a look at the status indicator on your battery. if you haven't changed it out, its probably shot. had something similar happen to me last year.

Go to a mechanic. You are obviously not comfortable with BMW electronics, so the next step is the dealer or Indy.

there are other failure modes for an alternator other than voltage.
if you hook up an oscilloscope and see wild ripple for instance. you either have a systemic power issue or your can bus is very unhappy. power issues do cause the latter. |

So you're just going to completely ignore the sound that it's making? You're having electrical issues and your alternator sounds like a frickin RC car and you're ok with that?
You have another open thread about your alternator overcharging. You need to check your alternator and voltage regulators because that's more than likely where the issue is. You're going to end up with a more severe issue if you keep running the car. Start from there. If that's not the issue, work your way up. If you don't want to deal with it, take it to a shop and pay the premium for someone else to figure it out. |

I think you may have a shorted wire somewhere. My M3 did this when the elephant cable for the trunk was ruined.

You need to get to the root of the problem. 99% of us are on this board because we like to keep money in our wallets for jobs we can do ourselves. That, and some of us like helping people. But most of us are just cheap. But still: even the most competent and able DIY'ers know their limits and know when it's time to admit a given issue is either beyond their ability or requires resources (tools etc) they just don't have. I don't mean this to be rude, but it's obvious based on the noise your car is making and your insistence that it's fine, that you really ought to take this to a shop. Do yourself a favor and get it sorted by a professional before your issue gets worse. Good luck! |

Sounds weird on rev. Could be alternator. Keep in mind that DMM only measures the RMS voltage so you may have voltage ripples caused by alternator. You need a scope to see the ripples.

Dude, how exactly are you arriving at the conclusion that your alternator is fine when you currently have a post about charging system issues.

https://www.e90post.com/forums/showp...87&postcount=1 Just because you're suddenly seeing normal voltages doesn't take away from the fact that something is clearly up. I remember being in an X5 with a bad battery once, and seeing warning light after warning light come on: airbag, camera, electronic park brake, you name it. Battery was replaced; no issues after. These cars are SO sensitive to this stuff. My money is on your issues disappearing after you replace your voltage regulator. Even if they don't, do you really want to risk cooking your electronics, or are you going to hard-wire a multimeter to your terminals so you can monitor voltages while you drive? I'm being facetious, but my dude, the answers have been laid out clearly. Let us know how the replacement goes. It's quite easy if you're mechanically inclined. |
