Anyone switching from 6MT to DCT or vice versa?
Firstly, the only reason I'm starting this thread is to see others' choices and more importantly to see who are planning to make the switch from 6MT to DCT or vice versa on their M2C. So please let's not turn it into another 6MT vs DCT war
I've been driving 5MT and 6MT for over 15 years and still enjoy every moment of it. I'm pretty certain I'm going with the 6MT again unless something unexpected happens but I'd be lying if I said I'm not curious about the DCT after reading tons of positive feedback and several articles that claim DCT suits the S55 characteristics better than 6MT. |

Going for MT, because it is more rewarding, cheaper yet more desirable down the road, and it's not my DD. If it was my DD I'd get DCT.
FWIW, my DD is a Dual clutch and I love it. These trannies work so well with turbo cars, because they shift before the boost drops, something that often gets overlooked! It's such a tough choice now a days on a turbo car to go with a MT, but I know I would miss it in the long run and at the track it is all about engagement, not just best possible lap times. |

I drove manual for 18 years before switching to DCT on my M2. I pretty much decide on a car to car basis.

That's pretty much where I was trying to go with this thread. I just wanna see different perspectives or motivations behind making this switch either way. What made you chose DCT over 6MT on M2, do you ever miss 6MT, or do you love the DCT?

MT until I can't order it. Which will no doubt be soon.

Most of my past cars were manuals like 540i sport, 335i and various RX7's. I''m on the fence between DCT and MT for next car due to time spent in traffic where there's a lot of slow and stopping - 2nd gear and neutral, brake, repeat.

Most of my cars were manual with the exception of an excursion to a 535xi F10.
I did not like the 8 speed auto on that. I love the 6MT on the M2 but I'm also curious what this car would feel like with a DCT. My x3 M40i is auto 8 speed and it's an animal in a good way. And that's not even dct. |

Do you 6 MT owners feel that the auto rev takes away from the experience. I drove a M2 manual with rev match and I found myself fighting with it. I suppose you get used to it after awhile but my initial impression was frustration.

I'd rather not have the auto rev match but it doesn't take away from the experience so much that I'd rather have the DCT. Eventually I'll just code it off.

The first time I drove a 8 AT was a 4 cylinder 228i loaner car.. I was surprise how fast it felt, even though it lacked power, on paper..
Two days into driving, I realized the reason it felt fast was the lighting fast speed at which the transmission shifted gears; it works in tandem with the rise/drop in boost pressure.. It was a symbiotic operation that rendered no lag; just seamless power until you run out of road.. I could only imagine the DCT works pretty much the same, only it feels much more aggressive. However, we only have a few years left until BMW decides that manual is not cost-effective for their bottom line and drop it from their models.. I feel like the only thing holding them back right now is the $2,900 DCT charge they can't subsidize in the overall cost, - yet... So I'm going to dance while there is still music.. |

I don't like auto rev match at all and that's why I'm always in Sport+ in my M4. In M2 and M2C, I guess you have to turn off DSC to disable auto rev match, which is not a dealbreaker for me since I always turn off DSC anyway. I'll probably just set my M1 button in M2C the same way Sport+(Throttle)/Comfort(Steering/DSC Off.
