Please help
The other day I found out that my oil filter housing gasket was leaking because it actually deteriorated my serpentine belt while driving on the highway. After replacing the tensioner, belt, and the oil filter housing gasket everything seemed to be running fine. I then noticed at idle the car seems to bounce up and down with RPM's. I drove the car for about 20 minutes home and then a couple hours later I drove for another 10 minutes. After a couple hours then I started the car and the service engine soon light came one. The following codes popped up
P0000 P0171 P00bc P0171 P0174 Any input would be greatly appreciated as I like to try to fix things on my own since I'm a college kid on a budget. The car is a 2009 328i xdrive. |

Hey man, I hope you get your car straightened out quickly and cheaply! One small note on your post tho, I would look up what each code means and add it next to the corresponding error code. That way a more knowledgeable member will have an easier time helping you. Good luck. |

Did the belt come apart on the highway and get sucked behind the crank pulley or were you able to change out the parts before the belt shredded?
How many miles on the car? Have the spark plugs ever been changed? P0171 and P0174 are fuel system lean codes. Did you bump any hoses or connectors?

The belt was shredded and the car has I think 117,000 miles. The plugs have not been changed during the past few years that I have owned the car either.

If the belt shredded, I would make absolutely sure that none of it got behind the front crank seal. If the belt got pulled through the seal it can get into the timing chain which could cause issues.

This. Unfortunately, an oily belt gets dislodged and sucked into the engine. Don’t ask me how I know 😞

If I take it to the shop how much do you think it would cost for them to do that? I don't know all that much about cars. Thanks!

OP, I’m currently in the middle of replacing my crank seal due to a shredded belt. all you need to do is remove the 6 bolts on the harmonic balancer and inspect the seal.
If the seal is compromised read these: https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1305990 http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1299182 |

This happened to me recently too, today I took off the valve cover and could not find any pieces of belt
Can I take this as a good sign that my crank seal has not been compromised? |

I wouldn’t, I suggest you physically inspect your seal. I pulled a long strand of belt out of my seal but found nothing in the timing chain upon removing my valve cover. I just finished filtering my oil and found one tiny little sliver of belt so now I’m really debating whether it’s necessary to drop my oil pan
