Mechanical Differences - M2C vs M3/M4
Are there mechanical (intake, exhaust, engine) differences between the M2C and the M3/M4 that contributes to the 20 hp variance or is it just in the software tuning BMW wanted to create a little separation?

The de-tune is just software. Re-Tune the De-Tune

I have no doubt it is software only. Just by comparing peak hp at peak rpm. M2C is 410hp at 7000rpm, while M3/M4 is 425hp at 7300rpm. Guarantee the curves overlap perfectly, but M2C has a power target and power starts dropping off at 7000.

Getting an M4 CS tune will be the first thing I'll do after my break-in service!
The following is from another thread and credit goes to CanAutM3 M4 CS in black, M3/M4 CP in red, M3/M4 base S55 in blue: |

M2C/M3/M4 S55 all redline at 7600(per instrument clusters). Their peak hp at peak rpm is different only due to tune. Turbo motors, they all die off before redline. S55 does mitigate that a little, compared with other BMW turbo inline 6.

So in regards to the peak power. Is it restricted by the software, or if it's mechanical and the turbo is out of its efficiency range beyond 7,000rpm?

The drive shaft is different so the detune effects are not known yet until we get real world performance numbers aka power at the wheels. I am hoping the shaft is lighter than the steel shaft on m3/4

That's because M3/M4 has aluminum hood and fenders, CF roof, trunk, and driveshaft. Yes, I mentioned the CF driveshaft because the M3/M4 weight number that everyone is referring to is from the technical spec sheet that was released years ago when F80/82 first came out (with CF driveshaft). As usual, BMW never updated their specs or released any statement about how much more the 2018 M3/M4 weighs due to the steel driveshaft.

We're comparing rotational mass of a shorter drive shaft, not overall vehicle weight. It's a good thing in that regard.

Read about that couple months ago but didn't know it was still happening. In any case, it'd be nice know the weight difference between CF and steel driveshafts. Also curious if this particulate filter deal applies to each and every model in the lineup including the limited edition models. BMW explicitly stated that M3 and M4 CS will continue to have CF driveshaft and I don't think they will stop M4 CS production after June 1st.

I would wait 3 months or so until I'm sure the motor is not a dud before I thrown on a piggyback or tune.. If an engine does not show signs of any factory defects or built by then, then most likely it would run like a well oiled machine during its tenure, IMO. Warranty withstanding.

I'd be shocked if it were just a tune that makes the difference.
From the Mini World...2nd Gen. And "S" and highest trim level "JCW" shared the same general engine, but slightly different hardware tweaks that always gave a higher ceiling for the JCW over an S. If it really is as simple as a tune....absolutely stupid on BMWs part...great for the consumer! Just pick up your cheaper M4. |
