Overheating After Radiator Replacement

Hello I have a 335i N54 and I recently replaced my radiator. The reason I replaced it is because it had a crack on the upper plastic portion that caused a leak. A couple days later my car after replacement my car overheated. I touched the engine compartment and it was not too hot. The coolant was also at proper level. I know these engines are notorious for water pump failures. I'm wondering if it's a coincidence that I just replaced my radiator and now I'm overheating. Either bad water pump or radiator? Thanks

Re-bleed your coolant. Hook up a battery charger, lut the car in acc, turn the heater on full with the fan on low, hold gas pedal down to the floor, and wait for the pump to turn on.

Cool thanks, I actually skipped the bleeding procedure because I didn't have a battery charger on hand. Didn't know it could have such an impact, I will buy a charger and give it a shot.

It happened again. It was running fine for a couple days. I'm thinking it's going to be the water pump. Dam that's a big coincidence, I hope that is the issue.

it could be that there is more air pockets in your cooling system

I did bleed the car. It happened again after I bled it. I'm thinking it's something else.

Some times those air pockets can be pesky. I'd try bleeding the system again if I were tou.

Yeah it's always around the 60k mark for the water pump to go.... mine did... Do the thermo while ur in there....if this is what the issue is. Maybe bleed the system twice in a row as well.... incase of stubborn air pockets

N54 cooling system is self bleeding. Once the water pump runs, it's all done. it would take literally massing scale "bubble" to be able to overheat the N54. Low coolant or no flow is what overheats engines. Not bubbles

I'd bleed it 2-3x before I went out and spent $450.00 on a new water pump & thermostat.

However, keep in mind 75% off all water pumps on e90's go between 75 & 100,000 miles.

I ended up being a faulty water pump. What a waste of coolant lol. I read "electric coolant pump cut off" codes through MHD. I am now currently replacing it hope all goes well.

The pump may have failed when there was no coolant in the system while you were doing the radiator install. BMW recommends storing these water pumps with coolant in them to preserve them. When you install the new water pump, make sure you rotate the wheel atleast one full rotation as per TIS. I had a water pump fail within a month when I forgot to rotate it during install.

That's interesting. For future coolant system maintenance, how do I keep the water pump filled with coolant?

Apparently its to break the static friction otherwise it may create too much shock on the shaft on the initial startup since they spin up pretty quickly.
