Plates after lease transfer
I am in NJ and am about to transfer my current lease to someone else. The buyer (in NJ too) want me to leave the plates to him since he needs a week or so to receive the documents from BMWFS and register it at DMV. Shall I do that? I wonder what the proper way is to handle this. Thanks!

I would drive it to his house with your plates, then take your plates off and let the car sit in his driveway until he is able to register it. Unless you know him or really trust him, I wouldn't risk it.

Agree with above poster. A number of bad things could happen that would then be traced back to you.

If he gets red light camera tickets or parking tickets they go to the plate along with tolls and if he does a hit and run and someone has the plate# it just sounds all kinds of wrong... like that kid in the news that crashed his car which has no insurance and he said someone stole his keys and drove it into someone's house.

Thank you all for your comments!
I do understand there are some risks leaving the plates on till he can get his own. However, it doesn't seem very likely to happen for a buyer with top tier credit. And it seems a reasonable request from the buyer's point of view at least I would like to drive it immediately once I own it. |

I can't believe that the bank or the dealership, whoever you leased the car with, is going to be okay with this, regardless of his/her credit score. People with 850 credit scores don't get in accidents? With your plates and registration you're a party to anything that he's involved in with the car. Sounds like you're planning on going ahead with this so good luck.

It's the buyers problem not yours. Why would you expose yourself to unnecessary risk? Bottom line everyone has said 'no this is a bad idea.' You should listen. Quote:

I don't lease cars, so I don't know how this works, but it sounds like you're doing the transfer at a dealership? If so, why can't the buyer register it and get temp plates from the dealer?
