Injector cleaners
Hi Guys,
I have question re. injector cleaners for example STP products. Are there some differences between diesel cleaner and petrol or they are also very simillar to each oter as engine oils, meaning that you can use them in both engines ? I know they are marked diesel/petrol but just wondering about differences. What could happen if you will use diesel injector cleaer in petrol engine?? It could have bad influence for engine or injectors? I can't find any information about it and I'm wondering what could happen if you somehow mix those products in use. Thanks for answers! |

I would not use injector cleaners period. I had a bad experience and could have been just a coincidence, However i researched a bit more and bosch specifically also says not to use them. If you go to bosch parts website and pull up the datasheet/brochure read it it says it somewhere in that datasheet. Dont ask me where that data sheet is exactly i suggest you also do some more research.

I'd suggest going with the Techron blend over STP as independent tests I've read have shown better results, although BMW does sell their own branded one if you're an OEM-only guy but I'm pretty certain it's just techron with a different sticker on it and a higher price. |

Thanks but maybe you have information about differences between diesel and petrol cleaners? Both are cleaning, both taking carbon, both decrease fuel consumption and restore power. Does it mean that if you add diesel cleaner to petrol engine won't happen anything bad and backwards ?

if you use any tier 1 gas like shell chevron or even costco...the injector cleaners are already in the gas.
i would just save money and do some walnut blasting clean the valves. That will make a bigger difference. ** edit just noticed you were in poland. you can do techron from chevron about once a month. if you have a costco there...they sell them for pretty cheap. i think $20 in a box for a few bottles. |

Red Line SI-1 Complete Fuel System Cleaner is my go to bottle as it contains more PEA than other cleaners. I usually run 3 tanks before an oil change (1/2 bottle, 1/4, and 1/4).

That said, considering the difference in how gasoline and diesel works I definitely wouldn't go pouring the wrong one in my BMW. Sure some of the weaker cleaners like Lucas (which again, I'd stick with Techron and not bother with Lucas or STP) say they're safe for both gas and diesel, but the way these fuel system treatments clean things is by making the deposit unbond from your fuel system or dissolve, and then properly combust like the rest of your fuel when it hits that part of the engine. I'm not gonna go in depth about the differences between diesel vs gasoline but they're way different in how they combust. You wouldn't put diesel in your gasoline powered car just to save a few bucks would you? So no reason to do the same with cleaners that go directly into your fuel, you could end up causing more problems than solving. Just spend the $10 for the one you know will work without issue. High quality gas stations definitely do have proper, healthy additives for keeping things clean and running properly (especially Costco!) but the ratios are different, and the amount you get in a Techron bottle gallon-for-gallon is significantly more which is both why it cleaners better and why you run it less often than every tank. A walnut blasting is absolutely still recommended but that's cleaning an entirely different part of the fuel system, you still wash your pits when you wash your ass right? lol

I also use Techron and haven't had any ill effects. How much it actually helps is another matter entirely. If you've got 10 year old injectors you might consider pulling them out and taking them to someone who can flow them properly and make sure they are back to original specs.
