Car Jack recommendations?
I am having trouble finding a decent garage jack that can lift more than 14" and can also fit under a lowered car...
those of you who have lowered cars and do own a jack, could you tell me what brand/model number etc it is and where you got it? thanks |

Harbor Freight Tools: 3000 LB. CAPACITY LIGHTWEIGHT ALUMINUM RACING JACK
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=91039 Has a rubber insert in the plate so it won't damage the proprietary jack points. Same store also sells thicker rubber pads that work with the jack. It doesn't lift more than 14-3/4" but it is very low profile. Used this today when putting my wheels on, and it worked flawlessly.

I think this is the item for that rubber pad I was referring to:

BTW, there is another thread all about jacks. Do a search for other options.

I have several jacks..one of the aluminum ones from Sears..one of trhe big heavy gray ones from Sears (2 tons) and then I had one from Costco. The one from costco was a piece of crap. The rear wheels broke..trying to find a suitable replacement was a total pain in the ass. I do not recommend the crap one that Costco is selling. I do a lot of jackin up at tracks..replacing wheels..and it just doesnt cut it.

I've been using one of the Harbor Freight lightweight jacks for several years for my track cars and it's been great. It's quite beat up now, but works fine and is easy to transport.
For my garage I got one from AC Hydraulics a few years ago. It's heavy, but it is very low and quite easy to use. I think the model I have is the DK13HLQ, or an earlier version. Here's a picture: And a link to their site: http://www.asedeals.com/hydraulicjacks2.html I might get the DK20Q if I were buying one today as the longer version can be difficult in a tight space. The height that the longer one can lift to is nice, but probably overkill for most applications. I also have the AC jackstands, which are very nice and feel "safer" than most. Expensive, but not necessarily overpriced. I think I got them all in a group buy on rennlist.com (Porsche board) 5 or so years ago with a pretty decent discount. |

Haven't bought any ramps lately, but I've heard that its pretty effective at getting the car high enough for a jack to be slid under for lowered cars.

That ezcarlift is a little bit less than half of what I paid for my lift installed ($3500 in 2004). If I were going to put down $1750 for a lift, I'd get a real two-post lift and drive my car to it rather than put it in my car (I'm not sure why it is important to tote a lift around with you).
The ezcarlift has a max capacity of 4,400 pounds, which is damned near close to some some car's curb weights. A two post lift usually is rated for 9,000 to 10,000 pounds, so you have more than a 100% margin in weight rating. Plus the underside of the car is totally open, where the ezlift really is in the way for a lot of repair situations. If you don't go with a commerical (certified) lift, you can find many two-post lifts on the net for about $2K. I'd feel much more safe under a car on jack stands than the ezcarlift. Just my $.02. |

Mine I got from Sams Club. They don't list it anymore. It was a Roush Jack. Looks just like this one from Sears. Same rating. I lift the entire side of my Armada off the ground to rotate tires. Get two off at once. No problems even on a slight slope. If you plan to do any work underneath, get yourself some good jackstands.
