M2 Competition S55 performance

So the 2 big differentiators between the M2 and M3/4 were balance and that the M2 had a much more linear surge of power and was therefore much more controllable.

The question I have not seen addressed is this: with the new "Detuned S55" will the M2C retain the progressive throttle and resulting excellent handling or will the M3/4 turbo lag remain causing the same issues the big boys have?

M3/M4 with ZCP isn't snappy anymore, at least, not like the originals. Both M2 and M4 will step out if you mash the pedal.

I’m not sure how it can be more linear. Given the twin turbo vs a twin scroll but that could just be my ignorance

Seems that if they "detuned" it by making the turbos smaller, could be more linear due to faster spool.

Compered to the M3/4 full torque doesn't come in until 500 rpm later.

M2

343lb-ft @ 1400–5560

M2c
410hp @ 5250–7000
406lb-ft @ 2350-5200

M3/4

Having driven an M2 and an M3 back to back on a short track (and owning a couple of M4s), I don't think you can characterize the two based solely on torque and power curves. The current M2 engine seemed much less powerful and the throttle response seemed spongy compared to the M3/4s. Linear to me implies a very direct response between throttle input and powertrain response. The M3/4s were much more linear. The M240s and 340s were very, very spongy. The M2 sat in the middle and had tons of lag in comparison. The M2 was improved, but still left wanting. The M2C with the S55 engine should be a big improvement. Plus, not much weight difference between M3/4 and M2.

+1. Also he describes the S55 as having lag, for a turbo powerplant it has little to none. The shorter paths of the top mount intercooler help with that. If early reviews had any negative comments about the power curve, was it had too much immediate power(torque) available down low. It was especially a handful in the wet. If you watch or read reviews of M4 comp pack, they are overly positive. BMW really started to fine tune the M4 and S55 package with the comp pack. I don’t doubt M worked their magic on the M2 Competition.

Agree, this will be part of it. I've driven the N55 M2 and I really enjoyed it. But I enjoy ringing out the S55 more. While it is clearly not a NA engine, above 6K or so it can seem like one.

It's not a crime or anything, but you definitely bumped it by posting in it lol, not sure what you intended to do.
