M5 Drivetrain Malfunction
Gents
Trying to consolidate the list of members that have the drivetrain issues. So far we know: 1. Most car delivered in March or earlier or with VIN # less than 2470 have no issues. 2. A significant portion of April delivery between vin # 2480 to 2713 reported malfunction. The problem started almost right after taking delivery. We will need more new VIN# or production to conclude if this problem has been resolved on newer production. I still think it comes down to : Does your Dealership update flash your DME at delivery or not. Mine did. I would request that if you have not picked up your M5 yet as some Dealerships do not.

Considering another member with vin #2713 still has the same issue it is unlikely that BMW has fully resolve this issue at production. However, they should be well aware of this issue by now and hopefully do all the necessary update / fix prior to handing out to customer. Good luck.

My drivetrain malfunction issue seems to auto-correct itself after five minutes of being turned off then on again. Based on the timing of it occurring, it seems like after it gets hot for some reason, the computer is telling it to lock in order to protect itself. I have to believe it to be closely related to the break in of the car as Im still under the break in period.

Mine just came back from the dealership.
They said that there were lots of faults regarding the high-pressure fuel supply being, well, not high-pressure. They corrected it with a software update. This is exactly what others have reported, more evidence pointing to an issue with a specific batch of cars. Given that no-one has reported a repeat of the issue after the software upgrade I’m hoping this bug has really gone for good. |

VIN: 2603
Delivery Date: 04/14 Mileage: 50 miles. Died while leaving the dealership after picking up/returning some parts. Drivetrain malfunction comes on while picking up speed to reach the 45 mph speed limit. Car stutters, shuts off in the middle of the road. 2 minutes later, restart the car, works fine... like nothing happened. Drove back to the dealer.. fixing it now (software update). |

I had the same problem with about 300 miles and again today with 750 miles.
I contacted the dealership the first time and we agreed that if the problem happened again I would send the car ASAP. I took delivery on April 10th. My VIN ends in 2553. I’ll take the car to BMW of Manhattan ASAP and keep you posted. |

Update: Received mine back. Dealer applied the software update overnight, finished about 4pm today. Had 50 miles on the clock. Put another 25 while driving it home, no shutdown, so far. Will update again tomorrow (going for a nice long 50 mile drive tomorrow).

Apparently it is fixed in software integration level 18-03-530 or higher. |
