M2 Competition Particulate Filter?

The particulate filter might be a partial reason the upcoming M2C is detuned from the factory. Sounds like a buzzkill to me..

Weird, I could only find topics on the "Diesel" version of this filter, nothing on anything gasoline related.

Could someone smarter than me shed some light on this part and if it could be removed or replaced like a sports CAT..

Why would it be detuned because of the filter? M3/M4 now has a steel driveshaft just to accommodate the this new particulate filter. If it was the filter, they would be detuned as well. M2C is detuned just to position it below the M4 as a cheaper, less powerful M car in the hierarchy.

Even if it does, it would be something minor. The car could make slightly more power without the filter but I don't think it would be a significant gain. Assuming it's part of the exhaust system, it should also be pretty easy to remove. The thing I'm wondering is if it'll be on US cars as well.

Biggest problem is the self cleaning of the filter (or burning out the accumulated stuff). In diesel this seems to be major issue especially if one does only short trips around town. The DPF or GPF in this case has no way of cleaning itself as it requires 30-50kms to heat up and do the cycle (it releases a thick cloud of sooth in the process). If it breaks down the cost is 500-1k USD. Maybe this is no longer an issue with the newer ones but for used vehicles there are specialised shops around here that are regenerating DPFs or cut them out and reprogram the ECU in worst cases.
Very annoying emission control tool.

Thanks, but I'm still wondering this:

Excuse the noob question on this, but where are these filters located? And do they restrict power like regular catted DP's?

Are they like cats and can be replaced with hi flo / nothing, Similar to how some people taking out cats by going with catless DP's?

I think it has more to do with not encroaching upon m3/m4 territory than anything else. It could even be the same power rating as the F8x but on marketing paper it appears detuned. I guess we'll see when someone actually gets their hands on it.

OPF (OTTO.PARTIKEL.FILTER) will only be installed on European cars. I read this in a press release somewhere.

I like how cntzl has to come into every single thread that's questioning his beloved M2C, which is not even for sale yet therefore no way of knowing if it's that great as he claims, and defend it's imaginary honor. That's dedication right there.

Of course the new filter will stifle the engine some what, most emission regulating parts do.
But as you can see most on here only care about modding for MOAR power, and it's nothing modding can't fix.

I'm just trying to answer people's questions and state my opinion on things that I like and I don't like. I point out the shortcomings of this car as much as I praise its improvements. So your observation is not very accurate. Hope you do a better job of tracking my posts next time.

Here are some of my posts about the M2C that you probably missed:

You can also find several posts of me stating how S55 sounds like shit compared to N55 or first gen M2 still being a great overall M car for what it is but I'm not gonna do your homework for you.

Don't get me started on DPFs. 95% of my driving is on the motorway and every so often the re-generation process takes place where the DPF needs to get up to a certain temperature to burn off the soot. There's no logic to how it works. If I've been on the motorway for 3 hrs and come onto local roads the re-gen cycle begins...it drives you mad as the car tends to increase revs slightly. I'd hate to think how it'll impact performance on a M-car. Driving it locally it can always be in a state of re-gen if a cycle doesn't complete due to short-journeys. Hopefully it's less painful on a petrol car.

Also , AFAIK they are located close to the engine but could be wrong.

The more I read about the M2 competition the more i'm thinking the N55 M2 is the one to hold onto if anyone has one: better sound, better looking, no dpf, lower price, lighter, available in MG, better looking rear muffler (lol). On UK roads I doubt you'd be able to exploit the extra power from the S55 either

A couple people on 2ertalk are saying the US M2C doesnt require the particulate filter. That is the real reason they are producing the US allocations first.
