Possible transmission swaps?
Hi All,
I'm just curious if anyone knows of anyone who's done a swap on the E9x N55 platform outside of auto -> manual. The 135i had an N55 with a DCT, is that possible? And then there's also the ZF 8-speed from the F generation, is that possible? |

Faster shift times, better gearing, and I'm pretty sure it can hold more torque.

Yeah I think the big advantage was the 8spd holding more torque than the 6spd. Shift times and more gears would just be a bonus. They were acting like the 8spd is a similar transmission to what comes in the hellcats. Maybe just with different software? I'm not sure. I just skimmed it since it didn't really apply to me.

How much torque can the new 8 speed handle? Following article provides some insight from ZF on the 6 speed.

The DCT trans are going to be the next best thing for this engine. With the power coming up, there will be a lot of hungry guys looking for another option other than a manual swap. It's already been done, a diy already made, this is the next big thing, the price tag and availability will be the only hurdles.

I would like to report back in that I did the xHP stage 3 flash on my ZF6spd this weekend and the difference is night and day...the transmission in this car was the factor that made it feel kind of dated to me. Feels completely modern now, can actually drive around in Sport mode without feeling herky jerky, and paddle shifts are at least twice as fast...amazing easy mod.
Feeling like I care less about a DCT or ZF8spd swap now that I did this...although I've driven in the 335is with a DCT and this still doesn't compare. Comes close, though. |
