G01 X3 M40i, G02 X4 M40i Comparison
With the release of the G02, wished to see how they compared wrt dimensions and gearing. Here is a side-by-side view of both. Considering the shape of the G02 allows for a better aerodynamic profile, the Cd is understandably less for the G02 at 0.31 (the G01 has a still respectable 0.33). The price shown is for an identical build (except for the $1,300 for the M differential in the G02). I haven't had a chance to run these together in the Sim, but the G02 should have a higher top-end speed (if not limited) given it's aerodynamics.

1. Torque is rated at 369 lb-ft for the X3 M40i and 365 lb-ft for the X4 M40i. RPM range is consistent @1520-4800. These engines should be identical. Possibly a misprint. 2. Curb weight is 4230 lbs. for the X3 M40i and 4323 lbs. for the X4 M40i. I think this would need to be confirmed. Unless the M Sport Differential makes up that much of a difference in weight, I would suspect the X4 M40i to weigh less. Not sure if the option is included in this curb weight. The X3 M40i holds a 1/2 gallon more of fuel (17.7) as well. 3. Weight distribution front/rear is 50.8/49.2 in the X3 M40i and 49.9/50.1. Both are equally impressive but find it amusing the engineers didn't achieve 50/50 on the X4 M40i lol. I know I'm in the minority but I think they did a great job with the X4 M40i. Looking forward to seeing some of these on the street.

Heavier, longer, less space. Where's the win??
I get that some people like the fast-back look. It's lost on me. Screams, Identity Crisis. If you need to haul stuff, get a S[AU]V, otherwise, get a sedan. Unless, of course, you really like this odd, compromised fast-back look. ;-) |

Believe the X4 comes with the venerable N55B30T0 motor, whereas the X3 has the newer B58B30M5 motor. Very similar output, but not quite.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
I ran the G02's data in the Sim as it seemed a good chance to compare theoretical advantages of the more aerodynamic shape on what is, otherwise, a very similar drivetrain and relative weight. It'll be interesting to see the real world test numbers, but because of the weight difference (if that is real or just related to the new M differential as kozzi mentioned) the G01 just edges the G02 by a few hundredths of a sec in the 0-60 and 1/4 mile. But as the speed increases the improved Cd of the G02 begins to take over so that by 15.1 sec speed equalizes (around 112 MPH), and they pull side-by-side at ~23 sec at 131.5 MPH, after which the G02 starts to edge in front. At 88 sec the G01 is 157.9mph and 17,504 ft, the G02 is at 160.5 MPH at 17,679 ft. Will have to see how the actual numbers shake out but it would be an interesting race for those interested in aerodynamic design of everyday vehicles and how it affects performance at speed. Especially since none of us will ever be able to see the actual wind tunnel testing. I also plugged the numbers into the chart, and the G02 moved up 5 spots in the P-SAVIE (old was 2.93, new 2.40). Also, it now calculates needing only 199 HP to maintain 140 MPH, rather than the previous model's 223 HP. Positioned well into the smaller cargo-sized subset (Macan, MB GLC AMG, Maserati Levante, Alfa Romeo Stelvio sizes), it offers another choice for those not needing the cargo volume some require in their SAV. |

If it had an N55 it would likely be a 35i.

I am just not a fan of any of the coupe shape SUVs whether X4, X6 or competition

when i was a kid, my grandfather drove a Buick Century 4 door coupe, kind of like this one from the google photo library. I'm sure it reflects in my dislike for the X4/X6 as well as the 3 and 5 GT. https://goo.gl/images/rySb6g

i'm surprised to read the X4 weighs +93lbs more than the X3. More glass?
It cant be the sports diff because all numbers are referenced as standard equipment and the m sports diff is an option. |

This may be a stupid question, but I'm genuinely curious if anyone knows if the side breathers are real?
I personally don't feel the X4 or X6 either. Someone said it best - identity crisis. You want the room in the back, but you don't want that much room in the back, and then I'm thinking Gran Turismo.. I am guessing this is good for folks that want the higher seat, high ground clearance but not really need the extra cargo? |

Not according to Wikipedia:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_X4#Engines But they could of course be wrong. And using the B58 motor for the G02 would make sense.

2019 = g-chassis = b58 The g02 is a 2019 model year. If you go to bmwusa.com to build a x4 then it is a 2019. |
