Stock 328i Exhaust Tip outside diameter
Hi fellas,
I've been googling for about 40 minutes and I can't seem to find the answer to this question. I have a stock exhaust on me 2007 328xi and i'm likely going to spend some money to get the PE mod down to the muffler and mid pipe. If i do this i would like some nice tips/bigger tips. The ones i have measure about 76mm on the out side diameter, would anyone happen to know what the inlet diameter is and maximum outside diameter would be for this exhaust? |

I think my tips (OEM N52 muffler) are 2.4" in, 3" out. I cut off the original tips and had these welded on.

More pics, but they're not the greatest, and now I don't even remember if these are my current tips, or the slip-ons I had before that.

I have my stock muffler, my PE muffler, and a set of calipers here, here but your question is worded so poorly I don't know what you're asking, OP.

I'm not the best at all of this.
So if i was to cut off my tips, or remove the covers to clamp on another exhaust tip i would need to know the diameter of that pipe. then i'd need to know the max outside diameter of a to i can use to prevent them from mashing each other. I do have calipers, though i'm not exactly sure what i should be measuring or what the max size is I should aim for. for learning sake, the In measure is the pipe prior to the tip and then out is the size of the tip right? |

Bro. Kudos for being honest haha and it's all good. Measure the distance between the center points of your current exhaust tips with a ruler, or caliper if you must. That is just over the maximum tip diameter size you can use.. so get something a little smaller. To find out what size your current pipes exiting from the muffler are (not tips), get under the muffler and measure them with your calipers, where they come out of the muffler.

Check this out, Pinscher
That's ~72mm O.D. for the OE tips, ~54mm for the pipe exiting the back of the muffler. Keep in mind the OE muffler has "rolled tips" so the internal diameter is significantly less. Not that it matters if I understand you correctly. That's ~75mm O.D. for the Performance tips, and ~54mm for the pipe exiting the back of the muffler. The PE does not have rolled tips so the internal diameter in the tips is probably 73mm. The pipe coming into the back of both mufflers is 63.5mm O.D. For new exhaust tips, you ought to be able to use Vibrant 1164 2 1/4" band clamps - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...=ATVPDKIKX0DER though I have not personally verified this - I did buy the 2" model, the 1163, and it was just barely too small. The 1164 is the next size up but I haven't ordered a pair of them yet. I have the E92/3 Performance Exhaust installed on my E90, so my tips stick out comically past my bumper. It's starting to grow on me Hope this helps.

PERFECT!
So I suppose I have about an extra 2-3 millimeter to play with for OD for new tips. very interesting so the PE tips simple look larger due to them not being rolled. That's a very big visual difference indeed. So, one last question. How dumb is it to buy clam on tips? I found some nice ones with carbon surround. just looks very tech to me ... but as i mentioned, they are actually just clamp on's. |

Hehe I'm in the same boat. What's dumber? Spending $30 on band clamps or spending $50 to have somebody cut a pair of pipes and weld them back together? I am undecided. I think the Vibrants I mentioned are narrow enough that they can be oriented such that they're impossible to see unless you were under the car.
