If you had the new M2 Competition, will you put a tune on it?
Coming from the F30 to my F87, I was thinking that the F87 would have plenty of power and that I wouldn't need to mod it much. Maybe just cosmetic mods...but after browsing the forum and seeing what's available, I just pulled the trigger on the Hex tune and a Fabspeed DP.
This got me thinking...if I were actually getting the new M2 Comp, would I put another tune on it just because I can? My initial thoughts are no, there's no need...but I think when the tunes come out and I see that there's not much more cost to add a significant amount of power (obviously, not really needed), I think I would still pull the trigger once again to add more power just because I can, but not because it's necessary. What's wrong with me? lol So what about you guys? Are you guys just as messed up as me? |

Nothing crazy since I'll track it but planning on getting a M4 CS or GTS flash tune.

If I had an S55 I would 100% BM3 the shit out of it. The S55 platform is WAYYYY more tunable than the N55. S55 will break the 500 barrier with DP and Tune while the N55 will struggle to break 400 with the same mods. Current M2 just isn't really as good of a tuning platform. N54/B58/S55 are much better in that aspect.

^Exactly. The S55 is very modifiable. No way I'd keep it stock. That'd be the only reason why I would trade up.

I'm sure the car will be properly quick out of the box. That will keep me entertained... until it doesn't and I get the itch for moarr powaaa . Then the mods start incrementally, first tune (especially with the ease of OBD flashing), then DP, brakes, wheels/tires, and supporting mods. Makes long term ownership more appealing when you can make improvements over time.

There's no point getting the S55 M2 if you don't tune it. No way would I put up with the extra cost and its drawbacks for measly 40hp over the N55. I am actually not getting an S55 M2 but just speaking hypothetically...

I believe 40hp difference will be only on paper. BMW usually underrates their engines and their claimed HP is usually the HP at the wheels. I keep saying "usually' because for instance this wasn't the case with the M2. A completely stock M2 dynoes around ~330whp at best depending on various factors. However, if you look at the examples of S55, a fully stock M4 ZCP can make ~440-450whp or a Non-ZCP ~420whp. What I'm getting at is the HP difference between the N55 M2 and the S55 M2 might be more than just 40hp in real life. In any case, as others mentioned, S55 has a huge tuning potential and you can reach near 550whp pretty easily.

Also I suspect it's going to be quite a bit more than 40 hp, it will only be 40 hp on paper but more in reality when actually tested on a dyno. Higher redline and pulls all the way to 7500 probably as well. |

Only argument I see constantly is sound, which is completely subjective. N55 is a run of mill BMW engine, nothing special about it. In fact I'd rate the N54 over the N55. |

1. Weight - speculating 70 lbs heavier but you can come up with your own number 2. Turbo lag - well documented and to be expected when there are only 3 cylinders boosting each turbo 3. Sound - one can say the flat 4 sound in Subie and 781 is subjective, too. Or just call a spade a spade To be perfectly frank I would not trade N55 for S55 for even money, but hey, it's subjective

The N55 in M2, is a N55 with some forged internals and higher boost. It is definitely not closer to the S55. They don’t even share the same block, the foundation of the engine.

M4 base and M2 whp difference is 50-60whp, not more as many think. Detuned S55 with M2 Comp probably has 10whp less, that's around 45whp more over N55 M2, stock for stock. As for tuning potential, on stock turbo and pump gas, breaking 500 with S55 is just as hard as breaking 400 with M2 N55. S55 also has a ugly top end when you push that hard. Lastly, M2 N55 has just a bit more power potential than N54, given stock turbo. Come on guys, fit a PS2 to match S55. Above 450whp I doubt you'd even care 10 or 20 more or less.
