Hit a curb :(

Hey guys,

Looking for advice. Hit a kerb at about 10-15mph. Not a huge one but the pic shows the damage.

Can the wheel be repaired?

Should I buy nee tires? The ones on it are almost new ;(

thanks in advance

I think there is a guy in here who has 3 mint OEM rims available for cheap. Pick up a new one for cheap.

I'm sorry, that sucks. But you're going to get curb rash eventually. If the rim isn't cracked, why not just touch it up with some paint and you'll forget it soon enough ...

You could have the wheel polished and feathered and painted by a mobile rim repair company / they have wheel tire changer balancer on the truck.

Or buy new wheel and keep this one as a spare.

I had a similairly damaged wheel just a longer scratch on my Z4 when someone hit a curb

Wheel repair shops in my area said it couldn't be fully repaired to look like new. Then I just gave it to someone I know, who had a bodyshop/paintshop and made it look like new without a problem.

Your wheel can be repaired without a doubt. Just find someone, who knows how to properly repair it. Tire doesn't look it needs to be replaced.

Tire looks fine. If there's no sidewall bulge, then no need to replace it.

The rim can't be repaired to look new. You can either completely refurb it, which still won't look right, or you can simply touch it up with matching paint and call it a day.

If it was my car, I'd find a new OEM replacement. Nothing says, "I don't know how to drive" or "I should be wearing glasses" like curb rashed wheels. These wheels are cheap enough on the used market...

If you really HIT the curb (vs. just grinding up to it too close) then also check your alignment.

How do they repair damage to a rim like this?

a) polish, feather, paint
b) use a putty and hardener, shape, buff and paint
c) using pressure rollers and molten alloy and shape and paint
d) use pressure rollers and thin and work the metal there

That seems like a lot more labor than the cost of a take-off 436 wheel.

"But you're going to get a curb rash eventually" ??

I've had well over 100 cars in my life and have never had curb rash or a door ding!! Now you have me worried that it must happen to everyone.....

was asking which one of those techniques they use, they were not the 4 steps you take to repair a wheel.

sometimes I do think it's cost effective to just but a new wheel

Depends how much they charge you per an hour of labor. Doing a wheel repair can be quite time consuming I was told by the person, who repaired my wheel on the Z4. But I got mine done for free, otherwise I would have to pay ~150$. Just compare prices. Better to buy a new wheel for a similair price than fixing it.

No, it does not happen to everyone.. I was able to clock 60K miles in a 2012 C6 GS with no curb rash. Also clocked 190K miles in a 2004 Toyota Tundra, most of those miles hauling a boat and she never had a door ding.... ever.

Personalty I think its a magic combination of luck (good and/or bad), driving conditions, driver location and driver mindset (this is for door dings). Some municipalities are notorious for higher then normal curbs and increase the curb rash event. As for door dings, one must pay special attention to where and how they park, when it came to parking I treated the truck exactly as I treated the sports car.

Yes it can be repaired - bought used car few years ago with curb rash on two rims. Dealer completed it, almost not noticeable. Not sure how much they charge. Hourly rates X time

Thanks for the replies. Just to clarify: I drove over a curb. Not a full sized curb, it was around 6". If it was just a graze I'd not worry about it. Car drives straight and it's holding the pressure though...

The dealer charged me $150 for a rim repair. I installed alligators on all 4 rims for about $100 and they really protect the rims. They offer many colors and the dark grey ones I put on matched the orbit grey perfectly. They stay on unlike the ones with adhesive. Easier and cheaper to put on a new protector than getting the wheel refinished.

I got some curb rash from parallel parking. It happens. Never an at fault accident in 30+ years but I have tried to get a bit too close to the curb when parking.

Have you never scraped the front air scoop/fascia?
