How much time does it really take the dealer to install and program the alarm module?

Did you want to try and install the alarm yourself? You can do the install without removing the rear tire.

The dealer had my car for a full day - they said the most time-consuming part was the programming, which took a few hours. It's hard to know for sure, but I called at the 6 hr point to see if I could pick the car up, and they made me wait another couple of hours.

It's hard to say. They had mine for 3 days, but it should only take an hour. The issue is with the TCU. When you add the alarm, you have to re-program the whole car. BMW factory has made it a complete PITA for the dealers.

Why in God's name did the alarm have to be separate accessory item???

took them 1 n half day to do my alarm was quoted 2.5hr labor.... cost $250 for them to install and progarm! $150 for just progarm if i install it

Get the dealer to program the alarm while they preform routine and scheduled maintenance which requires a progman update. My dealer performed the alarm programming for free on two separate occasions, because they had to do the progman for other issues.
