Used car - Oil refill: Which type of oil needed?

BMW 3 GT - 318d - 2015.

“Please refill 1L oil”

I dont know which type of oil used by the previous owner. What can i do? Full change of oil needed?

No, I would just add a quart of oil that is recommended by the owners manual. Then resume regular oil change intervals (5-10k miles).

You don't know what was used, you don't know when the last oil change was, I would just change all the oil at this time, it can't hurt

Now we are making assumptions that OP doesnt know when oil was last changed?

I agree, for $50 how could you go wrong to change the oil completely but that wasn't the point of this post.

Then just add 1L of oil. You could start with the factory put in your car.
Any oil is better than low oil.
