Redline Break-in Additive
I'm looking to take delivery of my 335i Cab in a few weeks (hopefully). Of course, I can't wait and am at this site daily to read-up on the car, and to get answers to questions.
Has anyone looked at adding this to their new BMW? Red Line’s new Engine Oil Break-In Additive (Part #81403, MSRP $12.95) http://www.redlineoil.com/products_m...1&categoryID=1 According to Redline, this additive contains "zinc & phosphorus (ZDDP) necessary to protect against camshaft and valvetrain damage on break-in." Apparently, the BMWs use only standard oil in the new engine, unlike some other cars that have a special break-in oil. With only a standard oil, this additive might help. Comments? |

+1 considering the first oil change is like in 15,000 miles.

Being somewhat of a "crazy person" and an old-school gear-head, I changed my own oil right when I hit 1200 miles. Doing it yourself costs about 60 bucks in parts and 30 minutes of your time. Priceless benefits, though...Further, I intend to change it every 7500 miles or so - NOT every 15,000 miles. I also followed the manual's instructions regarding break-in mph/rpm/vehicle speed/braking/etc.
What I was always told is that the 2 most important items regarding engine break-in are: 1) vary the RPMs, but don't go any higher than the manual states 2) be sure to "load" the engine both ways. i.e. when the engine is pulling the car and when the car is pulling the engine (after downshifting). -A |

I did mean Synthetic oil, when I wrote "standard". What I meant by standard is that BMW does not use any special break-in oil, like some other manufacturers. Would the Redline additive help in this case?

This is debatable, but my thought on the matter is this:
If the additive actually made any kind of substantial improvement it's something that would be included from the factory. It would be touted and advertised by the manufacturer and it would inevitably sell more cars. So, in other words, I just don't think it's worth it. I don't think it will hurt anything, of course. If I were you I would be more concerned about changing the oil after the break-in period and then more frequently than what the manual states. That's the easiest way to ensure that your engine is trouble-free for a long, long time. |

All "M" models get a 1200 mile change. So I'm guessing the non-"M"'s do not receive special factory fill.
