J.D. initial quality has little to do with long term reliability. You can bet that many of those automakers will trade spaces far up and down that list on longer term reliability. Mercedes and Audi in particular. The 3 series rates above average in reliability by most services. I will say that my 328 coupe after 11 weeks of ownership has the best initial quality of any car that I have owned including various new Hondas. I would not worry about this list too much.

Quite interesting because my coworkers who have Porsches and Benzes seem to be complaining about getting warranty repairs. JD Power and Consumer Reports sure are on different sides of the fence. Wonder whose numbers are statistically valid.

i have to say my audi had two issues in its life (recall and one diff seal warrant covered). of course after 100K all heck is breaking loose.

I do not think they are factoring keeping the car for 8 years/100K miles.

the story would change dramatically then.

Does this really surprise you guys? I know BMW owners like to tell themselves that they are the best cars on the road, but the bottom line is that BMWs just aren't very reliable cars. Look at the number of known issues on brand new cars like the fuel pumps and turbo wastegates. My parents had a 735iL and it's transmission went out not too long after 100,000 miles. They really aren't that reliable.

But then, that's not why we buy the cars. We buy them because of how incredible they are built. BMWs drive amazingly, and for me that's worth it since they typically do a pretty good job of getting you a loaner and all if something does go wrong. I'd personally never own a BMW out of warranty because it just doesn't seem smart to me with their issues, but under warranty they are amazing cars.

.

Guess its all relative.

Personally i consider a car is reliable if it can make it to 100k without any major issues.

True, but the transmission just going out is a big problem, and at the time I seem to remember it being a common problem on those cars. The transmission going out is about as bad as the engine blowing up after 100k miles. For today's standards, that's not that great.

I can't speak for too much ealier than that because I thin they bought it with 90k or so miles on it. There were also cooling issues no matter what was done to the car. Initially it was thought to have overheated and warped the heads or something, my dad went to the extreme of remove the heads and getting everything refinished, as well as replacing just about every other part of the cooling system with little success.

Perhaps that was just a bad car, it happens, but still, overall, BMWs are not the most reliable cars by a long shot.

That list seems damn accurate. I have Lexus and Infiniti....both cars - ZERO problems and we've had the Lexus 11 years and Infiniti 4 years.

Had the BMW almost two years now - NUMEROUS problems.

Coincidence? I think not.

Well, I'm on my 13th BMW since 1995 (325i then) and I can honestly say I have had very little if any problems and no major problems ever. The only and worst BMW with problems was my 2001 X5 3.0 which had numerous very little issues. I had a 2004 X3 which we put 34,000 miles on that never went in for service except oil changes. I have a 2007 X3 for 20 months with 0 problems and a 2007 E93 (12 months) with 0 problems. I traded a E46 M3 with 32,000 miles and the only time ever in the shop was because the trim around the door came off because of the humidity in South Carolina. So for every example of a problem car BMW u can bitch about there are people like me that swear by BMW not at them and I don't work for them or are associated with them in any way. I will say their dealership in Columuia sucks and has changed hands three times but I can't bitch about quality of the cars.

If you got your cars from the same dealership...they must really treat you like a king!

There is no one there more than a couple of years. I have gone through 6 or 7 CA's, salespeople or whatever they are called. Twice I have ordered cars and the person I ordered from was gone when the car arrived.

Which is less important... Most that have replied to this thread are refering to reliability.

Initial only covers what, the first 90 days of ownership? There also is no quantification of the severity of the "problems".

that's because MB drivers are usually older people, and they tend to complain less or don't even bother to complain...

in case you guys haven't noticed, mb has really stepped up their game to get back their reputation for overengineered vault-like cars. bmw drivers shouldn't ever be dogging mb for their reliability, i dont think that bmw has ever been considered "reliable" which is nothing to say about driveability or anything else which is why ppl buy them anyways. on another note, i like how every brand is evenly spaced then land rover just takes a freefall.
