Hotlap in the new F90 M5 during Daytona Rolex 24

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Was lucky to be picked to do hot laps in the new F90 M5 during this weekends Rolex 24 at Daytona.

Mat Mullins at the wheel.

Registered 163 mph on the digital cluster on the straight.

The car is amazing!

Ya, we in the US will always be jealous, but our long haul trucks carry too much weight and consequently put a lot of wear on our interstate highways

163. Not impressed. Maybe hit the limiter. Granted, hauling a bit of extra weight there.

Do people plan on tracking M5s ?
M3 and M2 yes, But I've never seen an M5 on a track.

But I may still do just that. I hope it has a bigger gas tank than an M3!

The Performance center guys brought M6 gran coupes to COTA a few years back and similarly were hitting right around 160-165 mph with 4 passengers.

At COTA they had plenty of tires.. but not enough brakes... Most of the cars were having issues with pad wear indicators coming on.. including the upgraded carbon brakes.

Lol. I was about to say the same thing. How are you supposed to enjoy the moment when focused on recording it.

I thought holding your phones or gopros and the like during the lap at these things was not allowed? Has been like that at all the ones I have been to.

Not that I'd bother personally. I'd rather just live it.

Plus - the tool in the front ruins the view for the passengers- like those idiots at concerts. So annoying.

Rant over!

Amazing some of these comments

On the Performance note not being impressive, the track was cold and this happened at 9am while cloudy so maybe tires weren't heated up enough to have enough exit speed to go over 163mph. Daytona doesn't have a very long straight either. Matt Mullins stated that this was the first time they were beating on these cars, not like other cars which they have been driving on the edge for a while.

Camera angle I agree it's not the best, I had basically three seconds to place the GoPro and couldn't be on the windshield. During this lap I was trying to hang for dear life thats why a couple corners into it I stopped recording with cellphone to stop being in the middle of the GoPro view.

This was the lap I decided to record. I was lucky to have two laps, my other lap I enjoyed 120%.

I can't comment on the popping collar of the front passenger :

Thanks for watching!

Pretty fast on the track straightaway. Personally I was more impressed during the ///M school hotlap in Spartanburg when the speedo was reading north of 100mph going sideways! Granted that is the wheel speed probably and not the actual speed during the drift but nevertheless, made me clinch a bit.

Exactly the Daytona straight is not really long.

So you know what you are talking about.

I've not seen any F10 M5's on track - only one E60 M5. I'll bet the F90 would be a blast on the track...

LOL on bigger gas tank than M3 - the F80 is one thirsty beast when tracking!!!

The banking on 7 & 8 is so steep you can go flat once you're clear of the apron coming out of T6.

The one time I was at Buttonwillow at the same time as a guy with a stock F10 M5, he set a quicker lap time than every E9x or F8x M3/M4 that was there that day and there were quite a few of us.

It's hard to judge from videos like this but the F90 M5 looks extremely agile and flat considering its size, weight, and the number of people and cell phones riding in it.

Max speed in Germany is 80 km/hr and 44 tonnes. US is almost twice the tonnage and over 100km/hr.

IIRC Michigan DOT build a section of highway to autobahn standards and although it was almost twice as expensive it experienced the same amount of wear as domestic construction methods.
