Downpipe yes or nay whats your experience?

Looking to add a downpipe to the b58... what's the concensus here? Too raspy? Or sounds great?

What about power? Heard there are cels will a spacer 100% fix this?

Also read a bit on throttle closure... will this happen?

Generally I am just looking for better performance and do not plan to tune the car...

Thanks!
JC

To answer your questions:

Sounds great, can be considered raspy with a full exhaust if you're sensitive to that stuff. I think it sounds nice with just a downpipe. A full exhaust is a different beast altogether.

For power, if you don't plan on tuning then don't waste your time with a downpipe. You're not going to notice much aside from throttle response and a deeper note/louder burbles. If you were going to tune then I would say a downpipe is 100% worth it.

CEL can be fixed by a spacer, it does work.

No throttle closures unless you're hitting the fuel limit, which you won't without a tune.

Downpipe will only sound raspy if used with the wrong exhaust.

As long as you have the stock exhaust or one that is not too aggressive, it will sound great

Only on idle for the first 15 seconds.
Smell is on the outside only, not a big deal

Thanks Mike, but would you consider the b58 smells the same or a bit more than the n55 catless...

Less than N55

B58 smell smell is similar to the N54 which is not bad at all

If you run catless, you continue to pollute the earth, and destroy it. Be responsible and atleast get a highflow HJS 200 cat Plus if your in a state that does emissions checks, like Massachusetts, they have some new rules in place this year that make catless harder to get away with. They can do visual inspections (they are now wearing cameras, and the entire thing is recorded), if they see a catless pipe you will fail. It's no longer just relying on the OBD readiness checks.

Sounds reasonable... are there any downpipes available with HJS 200 cell cat?

Looks like 200 cell is only for N55, 300 cell for B58.
http://www.fabspeed.com/bmw-m140i-m2...rter-downpipe/

Lots of catless options, not so many high flow options for B58. And they are expensive $1300+

Just go catless and enjoy it, one car isn't gonna make much of a difference when you have many more cars, planes, ships, factories causing MUCH more pollution. 300 and even 200cel is not worth it at all, still too restrictive imo.

Evolution Racewerks offers a catted 200 CEL version for less than $1000

In terms of performance, anything over 200 CEL is a waste of money

This is the problem with this mentality. One car at a time.. Add them up and the pollution is huge, get a 200 cell cat.

I've got a Remus catback on my 340i at the moment. Is there a particular brand of downpipe that would sound best with that? I'm after a catted dp only

Spend sometime hanging at the burnout box, and the smell of a high flow or catless downpipe will never bother you again, ...... that's a promise!
PS: bring the wife and kids too

On a side note, the smell that I get with a high flow catted downpipe is only present during startup, and WOT bursts. These cars are so clean, it's not even a smelly smell.
Oh, and the sound, ..... so worth all of it, .... and no CEL for me at all

a downpipe any most turbo cars helps a lot. im not sure what cells are but it sounds like restriction on a downpipe which is funny to me as it defies the whole purpose. If the soubd bothers you stay stock. i read a nice 12 page doc on the b58 motor and im quite impressed. i also found out bmw developed it but then toyota came in later with the supra engine too. i own a 2017 tacoma too and love having a reliable car after my n54 335i i had.
