Hello,

Does e90 come with LSD? If not, is it available in the market right now?

Thanks

LSD does several things for serveral type of roads. Actually, it just makes sure both of your rear wheels spin equally.

If you get in to a right hard turn (high speed), you car starts to roll outward. Your left wheels take most of the weight tranfer. Your right wheels have lesser force to be pressed on the road (due to the weight transfer), and then the rear wheel (inside) starts to spin freely. Car slows down.

I just focus on the rear wheels only. Limited slip diff. helps you get out of the turn faster. That is for race purpose.

For rallying or drag racing, they work quite the same.

A little too much for me to write in a post - plus figures help you learn.

EDIT: Let me attempt to be concise:

The differential is just a device to convert the engine's torque into two outputs so that it can be delivered to the two wheels (in the E90's case, the two rear wheels).

Open differentials are standard. Torque is split evenly between the two wheels.

However, during offroading conditions (or aggressive conditions), one of the drive wheels may slip whether that's due to being stuck in the air, slipping on water/ice/dirt, or cornering extremely fast. When you corner very fast, the outer wheel travels a longer distance and has to spin more.

The LSD solves this problem. If a wheel slips, it will transfer torque from the slipping wheel to the other wheel so that torque is not wasted in the slipping wheel. The LSD is perhaps best felt for offroaders or heavy auto x'ers.

LSD is a mechanical form of traction control in the diff. When one wheel is spinning faster than the other, it will direct power to the slower wheel.

You will not notice the difference between LSD and non-LSD unless your really pushing it into corners, or if your producing a crazy amount of HP.

When you do push a non-LSD car into a hard corner, you might unweight the inside rear wheel and all the power will be sent to that wheel- spinning it like crazy but not propelling the car forward. LSD prevents this.

Same story if you got too much power- by the way that car torques under accell, or just uneven road surface, rain, snow etc, you might start spinning one wheel, and once this happens on a non LSD car, all the power goes to that spinning wheel- wasting power- LSD prevents this too.

BMW's stopped equipping their cars with LSD's because they got the electronic traction control to take it's place instead- which isn't as good because it overheats brakes and cuts engine power- but LSD diffs cost at least 5x more than regular non-LSD diffs.

I hope quaife makes one soon. I know they do custom orders if they have similar production models. But it seems like they don't have applications for E46 even. So let's say E30 or E36 has similar differential then E90, and all they need is to alter a few small components, we might be able to get them to do one small production run for us. On my old car we had them did one run of 25 LSD's for us on the 3G eclipse. They were willing to do it because it had the same differential as the 2G, and all they had to do was reverse the parts (since 2G has transversed motor while 3G didn't). We got enough people together and dropped deposits and go it done. Perhaps we can get people here too.

So do xDrive equipped e90s essentially have LSD capabilities then?

www.drexler-motorsport.com have one (up to 100% locking just like the current M3), one of my friends has a 130i with this limited slip diff. Great sliding and perpetual sideways motion(AND you have TRACTION)

BUT the 130i's gearing and differential differs a bit from the 330i's gearing and diff.

Prices vary but for about 1,900 EUROS you get your LSD
and then they'll take your 'old' open diff back.

Those are electronically locking diffs, our normal 330i rwd has also a electronically locking diff(or better say, that's the DSC/DTC you feel kicking in, just by stopping the wheels from spinning etc) but that's not what we want, we want the inner wheel not to spin anymore and bring its energy/power to the outside wheel(and vice versa) for more traction and more fun.

I believe the E30 was the last 3-er to be sold with LSD. All M cars have LSD.

Try to make a macho power on U turn when stepping on the gas on wet tarmac(When traffic allows it) in 1'st gear in your normal E90 with an open diff and the DTC/DSC shut off.

Almost nothing happens but a lot of wheelspin. No U turn.
With a LSD you get your beautiful U turn and oversteer plenty.

The guys I do driving events with work for diffsonline. They mentioned to me last fall that they had a e90 diff, with optional lokup rates. http://diffsonline.com/

I've never done business with them, but I have read in other forums of people who have, and were satisfied.

When the 335i comes out with the N54 turbo engine with 306hp, it had better come with an LSD or else there's gonna be a lot of wheel slipping happenin' when powering out of corners.

If or when the LSD exists, then maybe it can be retrofitted into the 330i/325i E90...

**********s.com sells one, but it's like $3,750+ not including installation. I was looking to get one too, but it messes with your DTC from what i'm told from TurnerMotorsports.com. Like, in corners and cruise control take-off, the DTC will ERROR and shut off, but while on the Highway, the DTC and cruise will still work.

Both 335i and xi don't have lsd(s)

Lsd is for performance as well as for safety in rain and snow.....most people forget that its a safety feature too.
