Sudden Changes In Exhaust Note/Loudness

Hello,

So I've been noticing over the past couple of months that my exhaust just randomly changes tone and gets much louder sometimes. I know it's not the exhaust valve as I have done the golf tee mod. It sounds pretty much exactly how it does on a cold start but than after about a minute it goes back to normal. Any theories on this?

It is possible that the internals of your catalytic converter could be breaking apart and falling out.

Possibly but would the exhaust keep switching from loud back to normal if that where the case?

When I was playing around with my JB4 one time I realized that when the "wastegate rattle" setting (default wastegate position i think) was all the way to the bottom, the exhaust was significantly louder and the stock-esque pops were stronger too.

Boost solenoid controls the wastegate position. If it is failing it could periodically fully open the wastegate, making the exhaust louder. Do you notice intermittent power issues?

I also notice this on my N54, happens randomly it seems and its not from a load being put on the engine, I'll be cruising on the highway and all the sudden my exhaust gets a little louder for a minute or so(no rise in RPMs or load as straight hwy). I am catless btw with Eisenmann exh(happened stock/muffler delete also).

Yeah but mine will get louder for a minute and than go back to quiet and than a half hour later get loud again and than go back to quiet

I was thinking it could be the boost solenoids but I just replaced them and I don't notice any loss in power. There could be a slight drop but it's nothing too noticeable. I don't get any low boost codes or anything either

That's when it seems to happen to me too, it's never she. I'm getting on it it's always intermittent throttle when I'm cruising when it happens. Did you. Price any power loss or any other symptoms because of it?

No noticeable power loss because as you said it happens(or I only notice) while just cruising and not really on the throttle hard, so I've never really got on it when it happened to see if there was. I'll try to see if I can notice anything next time it happens. I've never replaced my boost solenoids(but have my turbos) so it is a possibility for me that the wastegates have something to do with it.

I've seen this happen on my n54 too especially when cruising on the highway. With MHD open, I can see that periodically the wgdc will drop down to 0% followed by an increase in exhaust note. It's especially noticeable if you've done the golf tee mod and/or have a louder exhaust. From what i've read, this is normal for the n54, not sure about the n55 though.
