One possibility is that he has a negative net worth and leases or finances the car. I.e. he actually can't afford it but he'll find that out in 40 years when he retires in poverty.

Other possibilities: rich parents/inheritance, extremely high income job (unlikely given that, you know, he's stupid enough to run from the cops)
