Well, I like doing fun stuff in cars just as much as the other guy. But personally, I'd never drift a car! I consider 'drifting' to be in the same category as "dogging" a car out! As in,...who cares,...just treat it like a rental!

The most I would do,..and have done,...is "hang the tail out"!,..especially when making a "U-Turn"!

BMW is certainly trying to market the M5's M xDrive capabilities with all of these drifting vids. We get it. It's fully defeatable. Now really impress us and negate the weight it adds.

Well- he makes a good point. If there's one thing I'm not impressed with- it's drifting like this. Do it on a track in a race- you have my attention. So sorry mate- I agree with him

They actually did. It’s lighter than the predecessor despite the AWD.

I think you are missing the point that @stage IV is trying to make in that the new M5 would be SIGNIFICANTLY lighter than it's predecessor if it had remained 2WD only.

I quickly looked up curb weights.. I have no idea if they are accurate but they came from the same source.

F10 - base curb weight: 1870 kg / 4122 lbs

So... BMW opted for MOAR M POWAH , felt they needed to add AWD to make it driveable.. and ended up with a reduction of curb weight of 23 lbs.
I believe that @Stage IV is saying he would have rather they kept ALL the savings from their weight reduction in order to end up with a vehicle that is something like 200-250 lbs lighter.. it would put the car back to well under the 4 thousand pound mark had they done so .

Mediocre suspension design (with regards to mechanical grip) + 500 hp ? Well in that case.. AWD makes a good band aid.

After building cars for decades with excellent mechanical grip and handling , as BMW has entered the turbo age.. they have barely found a way to get their M POWER to the ground. First they didn't even put limited slip differentials in cars like the E90... The E9x M3, E82 1M, F10 M5, F87 M2, F80 M3 and F82 M4 all struggle with mechanical grip. The M4 GTS gets shamed on track without particular attention to detail to dial in the setup. They've *just* begun to figure out things with the F80 and F82 ZCP update.

Band aids are supposed to be removable after a given amount of time.

It's more like titanium rods in its legs, you'll always be reminded that they're there.

You're totally right. The driver loves it so much he sets 2 world records in the car doing just that. Meanwhile he's not a millennial.

If you don't like a good drift once in a while, you're not skilled enough of a driver to induce, sustain and then correct it a controlled manor.
