Bruno Spengler Breaks Lap Record at Shanghai International Circuit in the BMW F90 M5
BIMMERPOST NEWS Bruno Spengler Breaks Lap Record at Shanghai International Circuit in the BMW F90 M5 December 21, 2017 Munich. The new BMW M5 demonstrated its outstanding driving properties and the perfect combination of luxury and sportiness at the “Shanghai International Circuit”. BMW works driver Bruno Spengler set a new lap record for a four-door production saloon, clocking a time of 2:22.828 minutes at the Formula 1 circuit on the outskirts of the Chinese metropolis. Although Spengler was making his first appearance at the circuit, and the conditions were not ideal on the cold and damp track, the 2012 DTM champion smashed the previous record by five seconds. The BMW M5, which Spengler had at his disposal for his record-breaking drive, was a production model without any modifications for the racetrack. This underlines BMW M’s philosophy of producing road-going vehicles which you can take to the track at any time. “Besides power and torque, I suppose the secret of this car is its excellent balance,” said Spengler, whose DTM career includes 15 race wins and 48 podiums so far. “It’s very agile and responsive, and the increased traction with the four wheel drive makes this car very easy to drive. It is also lighter than the previous generation, which plays an important role on a track like this.” The BMW M5: the new high-performance sedan. Thanks to numerous innovative features, the new BMW M5 offers perfect handling up to the vehicle’s dynamics limits – both on the road and on the racetrack. These include the newly designed M-specific four-wheel drive system M xDrive being employed in the BMW M5 for the first time. It guarantees optimised driving dynamics through precise handling and perfect traction. The heart of the BMW M5, the 4.4-litre V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology, has been extensively revised by our M engineers. It delivers 441 kW/600 hp and a maximum torque of 750 Nm, offering a significant increase in performance vs. the predecessor models. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h with the new 8-speed Steptronic transmission featuring Drivelogic is just 3.4 seconds. The M-specific suspension helps optimise driving dynamics. Weight is also a crucial factor in terms of performance and has been further reduced by the roof being made from carbon fibre reinforced plastic.

That's amazing and all. But what are the other times and set by what cars? I found a lap time for the last gen Porsche Panamera. Is that the time it beat? If so it smashed that time easily haha

The time it beats was set by new Panamera turbo just a few months ago.
SH F1 circuit isn't a popular one for lap time setting. Very few manufacturers show interest as it's of poor marketing value unless they're confident to break time record. Before panamera, it was GM in 2009 when they wanted to break into High Performance Sedan market in China with CTS-V. And CTS-V easily made a record then.

This is getting a little ridiculous now. I mean we all get the Nurburgring lap time has pretty much become the new 0-60 but, now we are just picking random circuits to set records at? In the wet mind you, which tells me the bar wasn't that high to begin with.
My M3 currently holds the record for fastest white 4 door production sedan around the George Liles/I-85/Speedway Boulevard street circuit. It's a little known track that hosts the home to work to home Grand Prix 5 days a week. Last edited by hotrod2448; 12-21-2017 at 05:53 AM.. |

Apparently not.. because it was apparently so unimpressive.. they sent Bruno to a different track on a different continent where the last sedan tested was probably 5 years ago..

Not Pointless
Many of us in here fail to acknowledge that China is probably BMW's second largest market with room to grow.
Driving the new M5 around the Shanghai Circuit served the exact purpose for BMW as it did for Porsche with their Panamera; create more brand awareness and drive sales. BMW like all its competitors, understand China's economic power and therefore don't be surprised more emphasis placed on this market. BMW already has strategic partnerships and China specific products like the 1 series sedan and 5 series extra legroom. Don't get me wrong, though a great Nurburgring time is something to brag about; it's impact is very different from launching and driving a car in a country you want to grow more sales. |

Can't wait for SA to get their hands on one. Right now the time to beat is E63 S (sadly SA's got the wagon version) 7:45.
I know Porsche quoted a quicker time for the Panamera but I prefer lap times from a third party like SA. |
