Only thing I don't like - highway whine/whistle

2018 DCT Exec. 2500 miles and I have always had this whine/ whistle noise in the cabin on the highway. Seems to be more pronounced when on throttle. Anyone figure out the source? Ugh. Otherwise perfect car.

Do you have MPE on yours?
I have driven one without. And mine has MPE.

Without MPE, it does not make any noise that you discribed regardless what mode you select to drive.

With MPE, it does have whistle (but not whining noise) when MPE is on track mode only. When it is on street mode, i figure not having any noise.

It could be just my personal sense of feeling inside the cabin, as definition of the noise discribed above could be different by individuals.

by track mode you mean valves opened using the bt remote?

Nope, no MPE. Very noticeable without radio on.

I have it. It is a whistle correlated with throttle. I think it started after I installed MPE.

Sounds like you guys are describing an exhaust leak.

I dont have the MPE too and to me its correlated with speed. Its like a mechanical sound coming from drivetrain. Sounds normal to me.

Digging up an old thread. F80 M3 owner here. I have a constant whistle on the highway at +70 mph and it generally correlates to throttle application. Folks over in our forum said turbos. I’m not convinced. Did y’all ever find out what was causing your whistle sound on the highway?

No mpe here. Slight whistle, but it's hard to hear. correlated with throttle. My thought was turbo. I never noticed it until I removed ASD. I'm sure if I took it into BMW they would just flash latest iStep and ASD would be back on and they would claim the whistle was fixed. I generally don't notice it, but perhaps I should be more concerned. Really doesn't seem like drive train to me. Some kind of leak with the turbo?

Paid more attention to this today. The sound is there on or off throttle. Not sure where it's coming from. Pitch changes depending on speed. Drivetrain? Wind moving over or through something?

Drop to one gear lower...does the sound change? If not it might be your tires and based on speed rather than engine RPM.

In my M2 LCI, I get a constant whine (as opposed to turbo like whistle) that's present at 4k RPM in 5th gear. Sounds to me like transmission or differential. Could it be the engine?

I'm with ZPrime , maybe an exhaust leak? I have had an MPE installed for over a month now, and have heard no whistle. If it was a turbo spool, you would hear it for a moment as it spools and does it's thing, but it would stop after. Not sure if it could be something else, but I would ask the installer of the MPE to check it out.

Okay so I mostly notice it at 3.5 to 4k rpm in 4th gear. At higher RPM the engine is noisey enough that I can't tell if I hear it or not. Not sure I hit 4k in 5th gear but I will try next time I can. Not sure if I should be worried or not, but at least I have repro steps now next time I take it to the dealer if I want them to listen for it.

It could be one of those things if it's not harming the car, I don't want them doing surgery on the car..... not sure.

Don't have it in my MT M2 but years ago i had it in a E46 M3. It was the first year(2002) for the M diff. It was diff whine @65 -70 with light throttle drove me nuts. They replaced three of them then told me it was a "design characteristic" of the car . Bunch of bulls-it. It was a "design flaw" not a design characteristic. I drove three other ones and they all did it but some people don't notice or think its normal?
Traded it on a 911. carl

Have the same thing with my F80 and manual. Wife noticed it the other day. I was on the highway and later realized I was in 4th. So I think at the same rpm as you. 4-5 more mph and it goes away.
