Available space in wheel arches

Hello everyone,

Would an owner of an M550xi (with the dynamic handling package) be so kind to measure the available space in the rear wheel arch, on the inner side?

This is to identify the best possible width for the rear wheel. Especially, I'd like to know the minimum distance from the edge of the wheel to the Rear Shock, as illustrated on the below picture (from Apex Raceparts website):

Thank you in advance.

I have DHP and 275 rears and was up for the challenge so I got my tape measure and iPhone and tried to take a pic for you. It is hard to get a similar photo without having the car on a lift. I could not get to the same image as you posted despite many attempts.

I then tried to lay an old straight edge on top of the tire with the end against the shock to see if could feel where the edge of the tire was and then check the measurement. Still not much luck. When I turned the straight edge around I discovered the handle would just barely pass between the tire and shock. The handle is right at 40mm. Pics attached so you can see what the straight edge looks like.

Hope that helps.

Thank you very much for your efforts, very appreciated.

It helps a lot, indeed. Knowing we have around 40mm of clearance is good enough for the aftermarket wheels I am considering.

I'm now impatient to receive my car. I like a lot the color of yours as I checked your posts prior to order mine. I finally went for the Sepia Violet.

Thank you again.

If I may abuse your time, would you be able to do the same for front wheels?

Thank you!

Front has less clearance that the back. I estimate that part of the front suspension is 15 to 20 mm from the top/inside of the front tire. When I reached back I could get my fingers in between the tire and suspension with not much room to spare.

I see you posted on the thread on the Dinan performance springs and that they had a 265 front tire. I think the offset of a wider wheel would have to be such that it did not move the wheel in or it will hit the suspension.

I am not an expert by any means but hope this helps!

Thank you very much for your contribution.

Theoretically, we should keep the same offset which indeed leaves little room for wider rims. But having a 10mm variance is also reasonable.

Anyway, from what you measured, 9ET30 looks like a very reasonable choice and it's 1" wider than stock rims. Not a drastic change, but a change.

Rear obviously offers more possibilities, but since we have to keep the same rotating diameter front/rear, there aren't much choice in terms of tires. 1% difference is ok though (that's the stock difference between front and rear).

If I want to go 255/35/20 fronts (which I'd like to fill a bit more the arches), rears can be 285/30 (-1%) or 295/30 (-0.22%). In both cases 10" width rims are good enough to match the 9" fronts.

Note for me:
Dinan went 265/35/20 front and 295/30/20 rear (-1.25%) (on 9.5 and 10.5" wheels).
Alpina went 255/35/20 front and 295/30/20 rear (-0.22%) (on 8.5 and 10" wheels).
Winter standard setup is a square 245/45/18 (which means no issue for the x-drive if 1% difference between F and R).

Cheers and thank you again.

Hi guys just got my Avant Garde aftermarket wheels. Not sure how wide you can go with OEM suspension but im running KW V3 suspension so i went with 21" Forged wheels.

9x21 ET30 front with 245/30R21 Michelin PSS
11x21 ET46 rear with 295/25R21 Michelin PSS

Not going to be able to mount them on the car yet but soon i do i will post pics.
