Wheel alignment/tyre wear

My past 2 3 Series E90 and my F30 320 D both have suffered from excessive front inner and outer tyre wear (predominantly on the outside edge). This is despite the tracking being checked throughout the period of my ownership. I am now of the opinion this wear will happen even if you check the alignment weekly, and it is just a trait of driving on run flat tyres. My current tyres are OEM fit Pirelli Potenza’s.
The car runs perfectly straight, does not veer one way or another, and seems to handle as expected.

Has anyone else had this problem, or does anyone agree with my thoughts?

If it is inner and outer wear on the front tyres, indicates the pressure is far too low for your use.

What pressures are you running? Lots of short trips?

I keep the pressures exactly as what the door card says, which I think is 2.3 bar from memory. But yes I do an awful lot of short trips in town, and seldom on the motorway.

From experience, run-flats are slow to warm up, therefore short runs hardly ever get the tyres warm enough to reach the optimum working temperature and pressure. The only way to reduce premature shoulder wear is to compensate, by running a higher setting pressure.

I run above the placard pressure for my car. Learned the lessons on the E91. May require something like 0.2bar increase to balance out the wear pattern.

This used to happen with my 2012 F30 which was fitted with the P7's. The fronts wore the inner and outer edges and the rears wore out in the middle.

I had the wheel alignment checked and tried increasing the front pressures and reducing the rear but didn't like the handling with different pressures. A tyre fitter suggested it was my driving style in conjunction with the less flexible tyre wall and carcass of a run flat tyre.

In the end I used to swop the wheels from the front to rear to even out the wear. Only an option if you have a square set up of course.

Like Pete I always run with the pressures slightly above the door placard pressures. This was a recommendation from the service manager at my dealership when I spoke to him about what I considered premature wear on the runflats on my E92.
I have done this ever since and increase the recommended all round pressures by 1 to 1.5psi.
It definitely helps.

Thanks for this. Ours are below the sticker pressure on cold mornings and we do mostly short journeys so I will shove another couple of psi in to be on the safe side.

2.3 bar is way too low, I run mine at 2.7!

thanks Guys, I will increase the pressures a few points of a bar above the door card, and see how we go.
