Comparing tune options

Putting together list of upgrades on the M240i x drive for the spring - The car will be used next year to bracket race at NE Dragway: As posted it already is a stock solid 12.5 second car with easy launch:

1. Mod one will be a exhaust - evaluating now but looks like Dinan
2. Mod two will be a tune: We are not going to base decision on warranty but rather on price/performance and known results

This will be it for Mods already have AFE CAI on order

options for tune at present are:

Dinan Sport ( no wheel hp dyno listed
JB4+ Dyno numbers vague but appears to be 30whp and 35 torque

Dinan Elite Stage One - again no dyno numbers at wheel available
JB4 Stage one: 41whp and 46 torque

I pretty sure some other tuners will be announcing next year but as far as I know this is it for now.

Any input pros and cons on the above from folks who have one of them installed will be appreciated -

There no "stages" per se with the JB4, but Map 1 is +3 psi, Map 2 is +4 psi and Map 3 is +6 psi. Figure roughly 10 whp per psi and you can easily do the math. Gotta run good 93 on Map 3. The difference between stock (Map 0 or 4) and Map 3 is night and day when matting it at 60 mph. Map 5 is +6 and also has more timing advance.

I had the Dinan Elite installed last week in my '17 M240i x and love it. I'm a chicken and wanted a warranty. Dinan also controls 4 different parameters to JB's 2 for whatever that's worth. I also don't want to reduce reliability. Dinan claims 414 peak hp, 478lb ft peak torque, a gain of 32hp/63lb ft peak over stock, 42 hp max. I assume these numbers are at the crank. My car is not only quicker but the hesitation I experienced in Comfort mode is gone. I like sleepers so I'll be leaving the exhaust stock. I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't shave .2 off 0-60 times, bringing it down to 3.9, all while never breaking a tire loose (even in launch mode). If I keep my foot out of it mileage seems unaffected but that's not a huge concern. Hope this helps-good luck!

Thanks --Dinan Elite is a a option - I really want to see some Dyno numbers at what is actually getting to the wheels - JB has done this not sure why Dinan does not.

FWIW, the dyno runs I've seen for a stock M240i are 320-330 range about what the BMW published HP and torque numbers (using a Dynojet). (Most of the German cars mfgrs. seem to publish the numbers that are @ wheel rather than crank (unlike American car mfgrs. do). Depending on the Dyno used and temps for that day, numbers will vary.

A good SWAG on wheel numbers for an Elite tuned M240i would be adding Dinan reported increases to the published BMW numbers to figure the gains.

I can tell you my Stage 1 tuned M240i certainly feels as fast as my 2015 C7 Corvette w/ 450hp and 455 torque (knowing these are crank numbers).

Additionally guys that have been playing around w/ M3's and C7's on the highway claim to be able to keep up with them or even gain a bit.

I couldn't be happier w/ my Dinan Stage 1. Starting to yearn for a Stage 3 just because I can.

GrandMasterKhan posted before and after dyno runs on his stock M240i for the Dinan Elite. I'm computer illiterate and don't know how to show a link but if you search posts by him you'll find it.

Another +1 for Dinan. The full exhaust sounds great, but for $500 you can get just the midpipe, keep the stock exhaust and get great sound and volume. Easily the best $500 I've spent in a long time.

For just around $1550, you can get the Dinan stage 1 installed by a BMW dealer that's partnered with Dinan, maintain your factory warranty and still get the Dinan 4yr warranty. You might get a little more power/torque from the JB4, but will sacrifice peace of mind in having two warranties covering your new car. I currently have a few CEL's and need two parts replaced. Might be due to stage 1 power boost, but it's all covered and the dealer didn't blink an eye. Free loaner, and an apology. Hard to beat that just to get another 10 ft/lb of torque or .1-.2 sec in a 1/4 mile.

Agree with above - and if it is only .1 or .2 in the qtr also agree - as I stated previously for some reason Dinan does not publish whp numbers and that concerns me as to what it actually does - I will not pay 1500 bucks for 20 whp for sure

Xdrive reliability with tune?

I was wondering if the xdrive is "strong" enough to withstand the added boost levels by the piggybacks currently on the market. I was running 13.2 at 104mph I bought the JB+ put +2psi and improved to 12.5 at 110mph it was great but I felt concerned with the xdrive since the 60 ft when down from 1.8 to 1.7 sec and the pull felt really strong..

Anyone knows the limits of the xdrive?

BTW the drag times are at a 3,750ft above sea level (El Paso Texas, USA)

Thanks!

You didn't pick up 7/10 and 6 mph from adding 2 lbs of boost. Conditions must have been better when running with the JB+. A piggyback isn't going to cause problems. There is always a margin of safety when engineering cars. They can generally handle a lot more power than stock.

people have been pushing 500+ to the wheels for years with xdrive. A piddly few extra HP from a JB+ is not going to cause any issues.

Just a FYI I talked to a Dinan software engineer - the dinan elite tunes add slightly over 4lbs of boost The JB4 a little less -

I'm running +6 on the JB4 with Map 3. That isn't less than 4!

Best tune is the JB4 not just for the extra power and feature but for its ability to datalog and read/delete codes as well

Since you are keeping your car mostly stock you can get away with JB+ or Dinan sport.
They are identical except the Dinan can connect using a Bluetooth.

Advice, stop worrying about power. .. All tunes will give you very similar power on a stock car.

Thanks for the comments, this is my first BMW I appreciate the feedback. I am going to upgrade to JB4 and let you know how it goes like I said I went from stock 13.2 at 104mph to 12.5 at 110mph using a drop in K&N, Firehawk Indy 500 tires, JB+ (Potentiometer facing 12 o clock) 91shell fuel mixed with NOS octane booster.

I hope I get in the low 12's with the JB4 and race gas.

Regards!
