Hey buddies, any of you have to fill your coolant regularly?

I have not had to regularly fill my coolant, no. However, BMW did have to refill my coolant when I blew a coolant line at full throttle down the autobahn after they swapped my turbo and didn't secure a coolant line properly.

Have you noticed any leaks? Check the front radiator fan and make sure it's not rubbing on anything (that's where my coolant line was rubbing and eventually ruptured).

Twice in week may be cause for a checkup. I had to fill mine over the summer after warning popped up. Was about a pint low. No issues since.

My warning just came on around 5k miles, I just had it topped off at the dealer on Friday. I do think this is a "thing" with the B58. I would definitely have your car get a thorough inspection though, no need to guess whats wrong on a 50k car.

Mine did it on Friday - car has 13,568miles. I believe it's since the air temps have fallen (winter approaching in N.America) so if any evaporation took place - the colder weather has the coolant contracting more overnight. I took it to the dealer and they topped it off - both engine coolant and intercooler coolant. I will keep an eye to see if this is a chronic problem ot a minor occurrence.

Da fuq? B58s drink coolant? I've never heard of coolant loss being normal under any circumstances.

Which tank is going low? Aren't there two? One for the engine block and one for the liquid intercooler which is built into the intake manifold. If it's the intercooler one, I'd be worried there's a crack in the intake manifold and it's being ingested by the motor.

I've had new cars drop their level in their first winter and never again use coolant. My 2002 R53 did it, my 98 Golf did it and my wife's 2015 X1 did it - none of those cars consumed coolant subsequently.

That being said doesn't mean that the B58 is defective but it also doesn't say it won't repeat - will just have to observe and see.

I also had the low coolant light come on twice in the last week The first time the dealer topped off the smaller coolant tank and said the other one was fine. Today it was the bigger tank, there was nothing showing. They sent out some coolant and the light went off. Getting it checked out now. I will report back.

So I got Emma back!

Service advisor said she had an abnormally lower level of coolant, in the larger tank. They pressure tested both and all passed. No cause for concern, however he did say that if she gives and alarm again for low coolant I should come back and they will do some more diags.

Nevertheless she also got a gut full of new oil, a nice wash and I got to drink copious amounts of coffee while I waited for her.

If it happens again I'll let ya'll know

Too bad they did an oil change. I would recommend getting an oil analysis on a used sample.

I had mine checked out, no leaks. It got very cold here recently so we are assuming seasonal losses.

The coolant tanks are quite small. It does not take much for it to show low. I just wish there was a temp gauge, that way if it happens again I can keep an eye on the temp.

Good point - would be great. I also think that if we are indeed driving our M///240i 's the way they are intended to be driven then we'd expect some coolant swallowing? Anyway it's all good for now so no worries!

Pat - you can monitor your coolant and oil temps on your instrument panel. It does require you to access this area every time you start the car, unless you get the vent gages, or Torque Pro and an OBDII connector.

Please share the steps for how to display these values in the cluster. Thanks.

He didnt say drink tho he said loss.

If its burning coolant then its a big problem if its just leaking its probably minor leak. Either way, under warranty so just let em look at it.

Here you are.

My M240i has a slight variation to the dash that's shown, but essentially the same process. You'll need the sum of the last 5 digits of your VIN to unlock. Takes less than a minute to get too with the ignition on or the engine on. Unfortunately, you have to do it every time you start the car if you want this information. To me, not a big deal as I only want the oil temp on the track. I can't get the B58 oil temp above 110C.
