Weird Drivetrain clunk (328xi/6mt)
Hey all,
So with my 07 e92 328xi 6mt, I've had this strange clunk/thunk sound when slowing. It happens when I slow and get to the 15-20mph range. It sounds like something disengaging. Its mainly a big clunk followed by a couple smaller ones (think echoing effect). Or if driving in first around 10mph it clunks back in forth. Stealership and my local indy said its the transfer case. So I pulled the front drive shaft and the noise has vanished, is it safe to assume they're correct? I have a t-case fluid change kit on the way as I've heard that this has solved the issue. But I'm not sure if I should just save the $50 on the fluid and put it in a low mileage t-case from a salvage yard. Any one else experienced this? |

There really isn't much to these transfer cases. I am pulling mine this weekend hopefully and doing a rebuild. I found my front output bearing is going bad (102k miles on it). Cobra Transmission has all of the components and they are pretty cheap. There is a youtube showing the rebuilding of a ATC300 or 400. Ours is the 300.

I'm also thinking of putting liquid suspension's 60a polyurethane in the t-case mount (which is where I suspect most of the driveline slack exists). But at the same time I don't want this to speed up t-case wear. |
