Odd 21" Tire Size on M40i
Anyone notice that there are limited tires available for the 21" that come the X3 M40i? Looking at tirerack for 275/35/21 & 245/40/21, there only 4 tires available on the market and they are about $2000 to replace. And I know this staggered set up won't last more than 20-25K miles.
On my current 20" rims, there are so many tires available in both RFT and non-RFT that it almost makes sense to go with 20s Thoughts? |

I don't even like the looks of the 21s enough to justify over the 19s or 20s, much less the cost of the tires themselves.
The individual 21s look really good for the most part but none of them are worth it to me. |

I can't tell from the order guide how the 21" individual will actually look like but the tire is still the same odd size. I also just noticed that the M40i comes standard with the 21" with no option I know of to downgrade to 20" |

The 21" wheels look great in person and if there were any decent tires available for them, I'd option them. The M40i in the US has the square 19" setup standard with the option to go to the 20" or 21" staggered fitments. I ordered the 20" wheels and plan on ordering the DWS 06s for them.
The issue is the same one if you go back to the E53s 20" staggered setup. BMW worked with a couple manufacturers to get tires in that size and they were all high performance summer tires. Until tire manufacturers decide it's worth making non-OEM tires in that size, we'll be stuck with what's currently available. We didn't really get options for the 275/40/20 and 315/35/20 setup until the E70 and even now, you still don't have many.

Upsize to 255 front and 285 rear and you can choose between Conti 5P or Pirellis and they're a couple hundred bucks cheaper EACH. See that wasn't so hard.

True, that is a good option but wider tires will have a higher rolling resistance reducing fuel mileage, I would prefer to stick to spec.

Sure, if you're just going to stick with summer performance tires. But than you're stuck buying another wheel and tire set for the other half of the year.

Aren't these BMW spec'd tires significantly different in their actual size vs what's listed on the sidewall anyway? |

Here's the tire P Zero tire X3 comes with (I believe): https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...=44YR1PZ4XLRFT If you compare to the Potenza S001 as an example, they are dimensionally exactly the same, except slightly wider, which is not a big deal. I know that Pirelli and BMW have worked together to spec out "optimal" tires for BMW vehicles so that does not mean they are significantly different. |
