Is walnut blasting really that good?
So I have the bav auto walnut blaster kit sitting in my garage. I've been procrastinating doing it since I just finished installing inlets.... which was rough. Is walnut blasting really as good as everyone says it is? My valves looked just about as bad as everyone else's. my car has 50k miles. Will I get better mpg? I have a somewhat rough idle, just fluctuates a little bit. Will walnut blasting fix it? Guess I just need some motivation to take car apart again and do this. Just wondering what everyone thinks.

if your on stock turbos, it won't be a huge difference but you'll notice small things. My mpg improved by 1mpg and my engine would heat up faster. Other then that, its not a huge difference on the butt dyno, maybe if you had upgraded turbos it would make a bigger difference.
I got my walnut blasting a 68k. |

My car idles and runs a lot better. At 147k, with it probably never being done, there was at least 4mm + thick layer of crap on some of the intake ports.

I had it done at 42K and it wasn't a night and day difference. Mostly fixed a slightly erratic idle and I got slightly better mileage. Car just felt smoother overall. No idea on power gains. Local shop had a special at the time for $300 so it was easily worth it. Don't know if I would have been motivated enough to do it myself.
The before/after pictures on mine looked terrible just like all the ones you see but honestly with the buildup I saw, I thought it would have made a bigger difference. |

When I first got my 335 it had 38,000 miles on it. Very shortly after buying it I would get an issue where occasionally, on wide-open-throttle, I would get a check-engine light and reduced power and rough running. Initially the diagnosis and solution was replacement coils, injectors and plugs (all under warrantee at CarMax). This fixed the issue for a couple of months - then I started to get the same issue again.
This time I took the car to my BMW dealer as I was past the zero deductible 30 days at CarMax and now into my extended MaxCare warrantee that I can use at the main dealer. They recommended the walnut blasting - this fixed the problem and the car has been running great ever since. The dealers tech said that usually they are performing walnut blasting on cars with around 80,000 miles, but surmised from the location of the previous owner (I'm the second owner) and the service records that the car was doing 6,500 miles a year, all city driving, and because of that the carbon build up was much faster than usual. The car is coming up on 80,000 miles now so the last time I the car was in, I asked them to inspect for build-up in case they were wrong, and for whatever reason my engine builds up carbon quicker than usual... but it all looked good, hardly any build up at all. Now, I like to drive enthusiastically, and while my daily commute is only 20 miles each way on the freeway, I'm going against traffic so I'm always at full freeway speeds. |

The car's acceleration will get better. The idol will smooth out. You will unlock lost horse power. This should be done every 30-36,000 miles. Worth it. Yep. Get a BMS or Mishimoto catch can and you will have a much easier time walnut blasting the next time around, for less carbon will build up around the intake valves. |

PM me and I'll send you a pic of my $10.00 solution. This cheap fix cleaned each intake port in 5 minutes or less and eliminated the remaining 10lbs of walnut shells from ending up in my driveway and surrounding neighborhood. Does my car run better due to the intake cleaning? Who knows with all the mods I did in one shot? The piece of mind however is priceless. |

It can't hurt and only takes 3 hours or so. Maybe 4 your 1st time if you take your time. Once it is done it is one less thing to think about.
