1/2 engine light when given some gas - no codes
Hey guys. I read the sticky about the HPFP but there are some mild inconsistencies that makes me feel my case is unique. I was at about 75% throttle at just shy of 3k rpm and the warning came on. This is my friends car, and he reported he tried to floor it (in drive, not manual mode) and it gave the same warning. I drove it home (felt fine) and before turning it off with the engine light still on, I tried to read codes but there were no present or pending codes. Any idea what it could be? Sparks were replaced about 6k miles ago. HPFP, coils, and injectors are most likely to be original. There has been no walnut blasting. Any help would be appreciated. But if I understand correctly, if it was the HPFP it would get a code.
08' 335i. at around 68k miles Thanks guys. I'm an E46 guy so I feel really out of my element. Last edited by YoitsTmac; 08-23-2017 at 04:34 PM.. Reason: added miles |

Seems odd that there wouldn't be a code. The codes should be saved until they're cleared I believe. If you can get a code to come up it would be helpful to know what it was.
Most likely it will be coils, then walnut blasting (especially if the miles are over 50k) then injectors, then HPFP/LPFP.

I've used my COBB AP to look at the codes. It'll show shadow codes that don't throw a SES light. I'm not too familar with the PA Soft 1.4 tool.
Also, I've never had my computer clear the code. I've had the SES light come on, and then while on the same trip (no turning off car) the SES will go away and I'll still look to see what the code is after I've turned off the car. Maybe try replicating the same driving situation as before and see if you can get the car to throw a code again? I should have asked originally, was there loss in power when the SES first came on at 75% throttle? Or was it still pulling like it should?

Interesting. Well unfortunately I didn't find any codes at all. I couldn't tell if power was lost, but it didn't seem like it after. Since it wasn't my car, I let off. So basically keep the foot down as the code is thrown? I could do logging of say...boost, rpm, and other PID's. But yeah no codes, but perhaps if it is clearing itself, I should leave my code reader with him

My car recently did the same thing. Maybe 50% throttle, around 3k rpms, half SES light. Stopped to read codes, and none stored. Half engine light was on, but it still pulled with 100% power it seemed. I have had a half engine light before, with actual decreased power.
OP, fill up fuel at any sketchy gas stations? I had just filled half a tank at a Conoco that day, when I normally use Shell. Has not happened since. |

I just got my first German, but if you were to give me these same symptoms with a Japanese or american car I would say its your alternator. When those start going they cause weird issues.... one being dim check engine lights coming on.
