It completely protect whole rear seats, rear sides with speakers, centre console etc.
Its a thick soft material with rubber underlining (believe it's waterproof)

I had it all the time. My daughter car seat was fitted on it, and when I had to take my dog with me she loved it as well and I didn't worry about scratching my rear seats or trim.
There are zips in a middle so you can also unzip left half and just use half of it.

So yes mostly for pets and kids I would say.
