anybody used stock brake pads for a track day?please advise

thinking about just flushing the fluid with endless650 . will the stock pads hold up for a 150 track miles?? The M2 is not my track car i have a GT4 for that but just want to see how it is on track. don't feel like spending 800 for a set of raybestos ST43s for one day. thanks carl

Just get Pagid RS29s for the fronts and you're good. Costs less than 350 on Bimmerworld

Take it from me - if you are an advanced driver DON'T use the OEM pads on track. I did and I regret it. They can't stand up to the heat you generate with aggressive braking. Install track pads and then have some fun. Btw, no worries about the OEM brake fluid. I never had a problem in that department.

So rear track pads not needed? I never ran rear track pads on my E46M3 and didn't have any issues...was thinking PFC08s up front for my first event...get some rears if there's a need

To be clear, I don't have track experience with the M2 on or off track pads...I was actually asking if anyone ran the stock rear pads with track pads up front

I did the 2 day M school last year, for the M2 all of the cars had the upgraded pads so I took that as an indication that they don't believe the stock pads will hold up to repeated track use.

OEM Rear pads will be fine as long as you're not causing the traction control light to go off all the time; in other words, as long as you are smooth with your steering inputs

Its not about being cheap...its about the marginal value gained from rear track pads...why are you so against it?

I did track pads on all four corners.

So are the stock pads not BMW M Performance Pads? Or is it just that the M Performance Pads are really not acceptable for track use?

Stock pads turn to butter - I had to take to the escape road at Spa after 2 laps, real brown trouser moment.

Different car but I can't recommend enough the Pagid RS-29 pads. Whole different ball game from stock and race wanna be pads like Ferodo DS2500 since RS-29 are full race spec pads used in various motorsport competitions from sprints to endurance racing.

Are the M2 rotors floating?

Not only will they be gone, you will also have a chance of ruining your rotors. Mine had some minor residual on it after a light track day that luckily was gone after a few days. Anymore runs could've been warped rotors.

Track focused pads front and stock pads rear should be ok. I've run this setup previously on other cars without much issue.

It's not about marginal value, it's about proper brake balance of the car and ensuring you stay within the correct operating temps by using the correct compounds when the performance of your brakes are very critical. People have experienced that stock pads fail under hard track use and will ruin your rotors in the process. They aren't designed for the temps the brakes see under track conditions. Run a grabby aggressive pad in the front and your brake bias will feel like crap as well.

But it's your car, do whatever you want. I'll continue to run track pads on all 4 corners and use fresh high temp brake fluid. The extra $250 bucks is peanuts to make sure the car works properly when you factor in the cost of the car, track time, tires, gas, hotel/food for a track day.

Did you measure caliper and rotor temps? Did you track usage on the pads and thickness of the rotors after a season? Just because you didn't have brake failure doesn't mean it's "ok".

No, no and no, do you measure all of these each track day?

My comment was in the context of a single day on track running a conservative pace. Considering the OP has a GT4 for track use, this is what I understood the context to be. Also, I wouldn't install/use pads that don't have much meat on them to begin with, regardless of type.

I'm not advocating stock rear pads on track as an indefinite go-to set-up. I run track pads/fluids all around myself.
