How Can You Afford an i8? What Are Your Sources of Income?

Hi Guys,

Was just wondering what everyone here does to be able to afford an i8, Ferrari's etc. Most people here have more than one nice car, and was wondering how it is you can afford these cars.
Don't have to be too specific, not asking you to give any personal information, would just be nice to see.

Thanks

When you lease, you don't have to make "baller" type money. Just have good credit history- ideally own some real estate- and debt to income <25%
(If you have ^, BMWFS considers 680 and above credit score as tier 1, so doesn't matter if you're 681 or 800 when it comes to money factor)

It's actually not that smart to buy high end cars, considering most are only as good as their warranty covers them. (Unless you're making millions then good for you, and 150K car isn't much)

Im a professional musician (brother is a big player at Weta -previsual animation co. Which is how I got my "big break"). Do it all from touring with acts associated with universal music, and write jingles for various networks. The amount of royalties I've made over the years that continue to pay out is how I manage to afford my fruits after priorities have been taken care of.

I volunteer my time by fostering kittens. Everyone loves kittens. Also, I capture wild owls. And possums.

I am a owner of multiple businesses, author, inventor, and some would say a rather successful stock picker. But in my early 20's I was homeless and lived on the streets, have no formal education. I have one thing that has gotten me this far sheer determination and I never gave up until I got to where I wanted in life. I have owned a lot of cars ( soon that number will be 458 and lost more money on them then some people make in a lifetime since I have never leased a car), have close to 200 watches. When you come from nothing things are important to you. It took me a long time to figure out that not just taking up space in society, but trying to give back to it is far more rewarding and what life is really about. So I help many charities that help those on two legs and four and that makes me feel better than my next car. If driving a nice car makes you happy well that's great, but all that is, is a symbol.

  1. Make it a priority.
  2. Come up with a budget plan on a timeline.
  3. Research the crap out of the car.. make sure it's really the one you want.
  4. Buy slightly used.
  5. End of 2017 / early 2018 is looking real good for the used market.

That's how I got into my Viper.
Thought I wanted the i8 but really needed a bonafide supercar.

A used i8 is back on the radar for a daily driver.

I'm a Donald Trump impersonator. I'm available for birthday parties, bar mitzvahs and even weddings.

EDIT: In all seriousness, I work for BMW and love what I do. I make a great living and the BMW employee discounts are an added bonus. Working my butt off here coupled with smart investments and rental property and knowing your priorities is how I can afford my current i8(along with my other vehicles). Save when you can, plan ahead and think before you spend your money and you'll be fine!

"Needed" a supercar I don't know if anyone ever needs one.

I echo the statements of the individual who said plan. Also you have to work hard and save. If you make $5k a month save half. If you make $10k a month save half. I am lucky enough to make enough annually where I can pay for my toys/mortgages and save most of what I make and either reinvest in my controlled assets or try not to lose it in the stock market lol. Even if I made a lot less though the i8 is an attainable asset especially with leases.

Yea. In my case, at this particular juncture, I NEEDED a bonafide supercar.
I don't expect anybody else to understand. N' now I'm thoroughly in love with my Viper.

IMHO the affinity for Leases in the new i8 market coupled with the lack of true "pride of ownership" after the Lease is up, is going to provide significant downward force on pricing in the used i8 market. Just MHO.
N' I can't imagine Leasing a used i8..

I guess everyone is going to have their own opinions but I wouldn't necessarily call an 08' SRT10 Viper a bonafide supercar. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love every gen Viper (fell in love with them back in 96' when the Blue with White striped GTS debuted) but something about them just doesn't sit them on par with the likes of other supercars.

EDIT: The Phase VX 13'-17' Viper ACR is probably the closest you are going to get to a supercar

I agree there I wouldn't even call the '15 viper a super car it's on par with a corvette Z06. But everyone has different definitions of these things.

Goes to show how well versed(or not) you are with leases.

You can't lease a "used i8" once it's original contract is up. You can finance it - but the residual programs are for new or demo (rare in the i8) which were usually driven by a GM or someone with status within BMW.

Just FYI

Yeeaaa, we're gonna have to categorically disagree on this point. I'm fine with that.
Here's a vid of my Viper taking on a slew of other exotic, street legal, track ready.. supercars (Lambo, Ferarri etc.)

All of which have >= 600hp ...600hp is a good barometer for an exotic, street legal, track ready => super car.

Also FYI, the ACR's are back on the track at Nurbergring attempting a new track record... up against the Lambo's and the Porsche 918.
Should be getting some results soon/later this month.

There's just too many Vettes in the world to be exotic.
The ones with ~600hp garner nothing but respect and definitely qualify as supercars.
But the other 16 MILLION.. ehh not so much.

With the i8 and it's current production numbers, it certainly qualifies as an exotic. An exotic sports car.
But gentlemen, that's where it ends.. and the primary reason all of you should be SCREAMING at BMW for more pony's.

Agreed. I'm not well versed with Leases but thanks for making my point.

A used i8 does not get Re-Leased (again). I think there are far too many Leases being abandoned (just on this forum alone, and there's more on other forums & YouTube & AutoTrader etc..).
They'll eventually go into inventory for sale. The "residual programs" are not of any consequence.

I believe it would be a VERY different story if more of you fine folks actually bought the i8 and took more "Pride of Ownership".
As it is, when the Leases are up, most of you are walking away.

Speed and power alone do not make a super car.
