Brake Pad Backing Plates

Do you guys use brake pad backing plates, are they necessary?

I just swapped out the stock pads to a set of PFC 08's - really easy with these calipers - in prep for Watkins Glen this weekend. I noticed that the stock pads have thin metal backing plates while the PFC's do not. On my previous 135i, I had always pried off this thin backing plate and applied to my track pads and then eventually purchased titanium backing shims but the company doesn't seem to be making these anymore.

Is it ok to run the PFC's without any sort of backing plate or shim? I don't think they are needed but just thought I'd check. Thoughts?

They help reduce noise on street pads which won't help much for track pads which squeal like a stuck pig.
