M2 Differential problem?

Just read in the latest issue of Car and Driver that their M2 test car had to have the differential replaced under warranty because it had a fluid leak and a half-shaft that was starting to work its way out of engagement with the diff. They said it was a "known issue" with the M2, requiring a checkup after the first 1200 miles.
Has anybody had any issues with this? I could not find anything on the forum about it, but maybe I missed it.
My M2 is scheduled to arrive at the port in less than 2 weeks, so I'm concerned, naturally.

This definitely applies to your build time frame. Don't expect to get the car for another 3 months or so while they wait for the part and fix it at the port. The diffs are backed up because of such a large recall. Sorry to bring you bad news.

You are supposed to bring in the M2 after 1200 miles for break-in service, so no matter what that is a thing to do. They had a run of M differentials with issues around the time the M2 started shipping in 2016. I've not heard of a new differential issue, so I assume the issue they were talking about was that one. Any car that shipped after somewhere around July of last year shouldn't have the issue.

"BMW issued a stop-delivery order on 202 cars this week. The affected vehicles include the M2, M3, M4, M5, and 5 and 6 Series models. They were produced between May 12 and July 4, 2016. According to a service bulletin by BMW, which was published on Bimmerpost, the affected vehicles will need a new rear differential."

It's easy to find out if your car effected by this. They were produced between May 12 and July 4, 2016. You can check it from your VIN (ask the dealer to give it to you) then go here and check your produced date :

Main was in August so am good.

So, this is common differential between all those models? Same part?

I would like to know what we can expect at the 80 to 100,000 mile range? Will the thing need to be replaced and what will the part availability be then?

So anything after July 4 2016 has a different part and there are no recalls or concerns?

The recall was a replacement for a run of defective differentials. Whatever happened that caused that run of defective parts was fixed, so cars after July 2016 should be OK. It sounds like BMW was pretty on top of things as far as knowing what cars had the issue, so if anyone had a defective differential they would probably know by now. However, some dealerships followed it up with another issue where they replaced the differential using the old subframe bolts instead of new ones they were supposed to use. This caused some people to have their car re-recalled to replace those bolts.

Cars after July were not all ok. If you check the main forums original recall thread, plenty of people well into September and October had issues. Since recall stopped being from mandatory, people were able to get their cars, and get the diff replaced much later, when parts became available.

PS: My M2 was affected by his, took delivery almost two months late after it just sat at the dealer waiting for parts. This was when it was mandatory.

PSS: the diff recall was followed by a frame mounting bolt recall associated with wrong use of bolts after the diff replacement.

Hmmm mine was Oct 27... guess if it fails will probably be under warranty.

Mine is an October build - Any way to have this checked out? Does anyone have their service doc showing the part numbers or the recall etc.?
I would rather they replace pro actively then have it fail on its own.

I do somewhere, but after it stopped being mandatory, it was a little harder to track down. I'm away for a few days, but PM me this weekend to remind me and I will send you the info.

I didn't remember seeing any people that far past July saying they had issues so my bad there. The recall was for vehicles "produced" up to July 4, so depending on delivery time and such I could certainly see that going into August.

I never had to sign this thing:
http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1285568
so I would think that meant BMW thought there was no issue in late October when I picked up my M2.

Ya that thread went on for what feels like a million pages. The numbers were greatly reduced as it went on.

What happened was that BMW didn't differentiate during the install to pull the parts off the line - instead they kept line going, assembled cars and then eventually would set them aside to get the diff replaced if they knew the parts were bad.

Turns out there was more than one bad batch, so a few snuck through. I think by late October/early November they had stopped doing that.
