Style 619 wheels - forged or cast ?

619 is the standard wheel on SE cars (except 520d). So far, so dull.

But the BMW UK website already lists this wheel as an accessory for the G30 with the description "Multi-spoke style 619, forged"

http://www.bmw.co.uk/en_GB/topics/di...yId=11274.html

Is this really forged rather than cast ?

Maybe it is - etk bmw lists its weight as just 9.45kg whereas another G30 18" alloy, the 684, is 12.2kg:

This is an old post about wheel and tyre weights from the last time I messed around with different combinations:

http://f10.5post.com/forums/showthre...9#post14385639

Seems like 619's plus a decent non-RFT tyre should be <20kg combined. That's pretty impressive.

The 619 with winter tire is 24 kg. I don't know if it's forged, but it seems a little lighter than the other wheels.

Remnib - agreed. It's quoted as 3kg lighter than 684 with the same winter tyre.

I kinda doubt it's forged, normally only M wheels and maybe M Performance wheels are forged.

Looking at the 17" wheels, they also vary a lot in weight, so I think the difference in weight is down to the design of the wheel, not if they're cast or forged.

The 17" listed weights are as follow;
618 is 8.97 kg
631 is 10.5 kg
645 is 12.1 kg.

It would be odd, wouldn't it ? I've never seen a forged wheel outside M/M Performance ranges, as you say. Still, 9.45kg is very light for an 8Jx18 wheel I think.

Yes they are in fact forged. Otto Fuchs is the supplier.

Thanks lemetier. Found it on Fuchs' website:

http://www.fuchsfelge.de/index.php?id=1105&L=1

Weight listed as 9kg exactly there. Maybe BMW's figure includes a different paint finish, and/or the weight of the RDCI sensor and valve ?

ETK displays shipping weight. Loose boxed wheels "cube out" by volume 98% of the time which is greater than the actual mass for transport charge calculations. The wheel on FF is the OEM wheel.

Well, that is very interesting. Why would they go to the great lengths of having a basic 18" forged meanwhile all the wheels that are supposed to be sporty, i.e. M Sport or M Performance are cast and heavy (with very few exceptions)?

Have just bought a full set of brand new 619's with tyres and latest sensors off a new 7 series off German ebay: 800 euros. Tyres are wrong size for G30 so will sell on for maybe 300 euros, so 500 euros net for a set of 619 rims and sensors. Very dull looking wheels but they are certainly light !

619's now shod with Uniroyal Rainsport 3 non-RFT 245/45 18 tyres and mounted. Drove for 3 hours this evening (on an emergency passport retrieval mission ) and very pleased with the ride quality, on passive Msport suspension. Still firm-ish but well damped, and less thump from cat's eyes and potholes. Slight loss of immediacy in turn-in, as you'd expect with a squishier sidewall and more of it.
